Advantages: delicious
Disadvantages: too expensive
I have the house to myself, a rare treat. I love getting to be in charge of the remote and the fact that I don't have to compromise on my food choices. Trouble is that left to my own devices I tend to get too absorbed in what I'm doing and simply forget to eat all day then it's 8pm and my stomach is growling and I feel faint from lack of food so I end up getting a take away.
I was determined not to let this happen this weekend so decided to stock up on some no preperation food. The tomato and mozarella salad from Tesco looked delicious albeit a bit pricey at £1.99 for a little pot so I decided to try it.
When I went shopping on Friday it had been a lovely day. Problem was that Saturday was freezing and salad didn't seem nearly so appealing. I decided instead to make a pasta sauce.
On opening the tub I've got to admit I was a little disapointed. The bottom of the tub had several mozarealla balls infused in a delicious oily dressing but a few sprigs of rocket and some cherry tomatoes had simply been plonked on top. I admit not looking at the salad closely before I bought it but I had assumed the tomatoes would be chopped and mixed in salsa style.
I took the cherry tomatoes with some more from the fridge and chopped them very small and fried in a pan with a little olive oil and some garlic until they were soft and took on a lovely mushy creamy hue.
Meanwhile I boiled some spaghetti and when it was cooked stirred the tomatoes through and then chopped the mozarella and also stirred that and the rocket through.
My meal was simply delicious. The heat from the pasta melted the cheese slightly and gave it a lovely smooth stringy sensation and the peppery rocket mixed well too. The oil was delicately flavoured with the herbs adding interest to my meal without making it greasy.
Overall this little tub of salad was delicious but I couldn't help feel a bit cheated at how little I got for my money. At 125 calories per half pot (but who's going to just eat half!) it's not too bad and at least you know the calories are also giving you a lot of goodness. A delicious treat but too expensive to indulge in on a regular basis.
Summary: an expensive treat
