Advantages: Tastes delicious, versatile, creamy texture
Disadvantages: You might think it is a little bit expensive compared to plain Wensleydale
I love Wensleydale so was excited when I saw a pack of Wensleydale with cranberries and blueberries as part of the Tesco Finest range. I have tried Finest cheese before and been impressed with the quality and flavour so had a feeling I would enjoy this.
I was right, this is a lovely cheese to eat either on its own or with crackers. Tesco have gotten themselves a beautiful creamy Wensleydale from Yorkshire and combined it with cranberries sourced in Cape Cod and blueberries from the US.
The Wensleydale is of the high quality I've come to expect from the Finest range. It's creamy and smooth with a well rounded flavour, as with plain Wensleydale cheese there is a very slight fruity taste which is accentuated in this version by the addition of the dried fruit.
The cranberries and blueberries are chunky enough that I can taste the individual fruits, there are definitely more cranberries because I can taste more of the tartness of these than the natural sweetness of the blueberries. The pieces of fruit are nice and chewy and taste moist and full of flavour.
Because this is Wensleydale it has a naturally crumbly texture, but this Finest cheese also slices easily and tidily if you use a sharp knife. The crumbliness makes it perfect for cheese on toast or even a good old Ploughmans lunch.
Last Christmas I used a cranberry and blueberry Wensleydale from Morrisons and it was very nice but much tarter than this perfectly flavoured Finest cheese. I definitely prefer this one as it has a much creamier texture and taste.
I think Wensleydale is best eaten alone or on cheese biscuits, but this one is lovely on toast because the cheese melts all nice and lumpy and it definitely feels like comfort food. My baby granddaughter is one on Sunday (even though I've been saying she's one for ages) and I'm going to take a couple of packs of this over to her party as a bit of a variation on cheese & pineapple on sticks. I think a cube of fruit cake instead of the pineapple and this Wensleydale instead of the cheddar, but my daughter thinks this sounds too weird. Before you all think I'm crackers, Wesleydale is a natural accompaniment to a dense fruit Christmas cake so try it and you might be surprised at the odd sounding combination.
This Finest Wensleydale is a little on the pricey side, my 175g block looked very small once I had stripped it of its packaging and cost me over £2. It is a lovely treat but expensive considering me and my sister can sit and eat a full block of it in one sitting with a nice salad. Still I have to say its worth every penny, perhaps I just need to cut down my portion sizes?
Summary: A delicious fruity cheese.
