Being lactose and wheat intolerant means that pizza is a very rare treat for me, due to the after affects. So when I spotted these 'free from' pizza bases in Tesco, I just had to pick up a pack!

Made with rice flour, tapioca and potato starch, the pizza bases are wheat free, gluten free and milk free, making them ideal for me and many other sufferers. The pizza bases are also suitable for vegetarian diets, but they do contain egg. The recipe doesn't contain nuts, neither does the factory, but Tesco can't guarantee the ingredients are nut free.

The shocking ingredient in these pizza bases is the salt content. Each pizza base contains 2.4g of salt, which is 40% of a persons guideline daily amount! This subject of the high salt content in 'free from' foods has recently been addressed in the news, so will hopefully be sorted out soon.

Once removed from their packaging, a pizza base can be topped with whatever you wish. I topped mine with sun-dried tomato puree, lactofree cheese, chopped ham and pineapple chunks. Then place the pizza on a baking tray and put in a pre-heated oven (200 degrees centigrade or Gas Mark 6) for 8-10 minutes. I'd heavily topped my pizza so left it in for 10 minutes.

When I took my pizza out of the oven, it had browned just a little (just how I like it). It was piping hot, so I carefully cut the pizza into quarters before eating.

Tesco 'Free From' Pizza Bases are quite thin, not so thin that they flop about the place, but I would have preferred them to be a little thicker. Otherwise I found the pizza bases tasted pretty much like any other pizza base and I don't think you'd know the difference without seeing the packaging.

The pizza bases are small, so I would advise 1 base per person. The bases are suitable for freezing, but I noticed that the best before date was a reasonable one anyway at 29th December (it's 11th October as I write this).

I found these pizza bases in Tesco's 'Free From' range section for £1.99, which isn't bad considering some 'free from' type products can be quite expensive.

Will I buy these again? Definitely! These are the only 'free from' pizza bases I have found so far and they taste pretty much like any other normal pizza base. It's just a pity you can't currently buy them in a bigger size.
