Advantages: Free from things I can't eat
Disadvantages: Not as good as the real thing!
When I was a kid I would eat shortbread biscuits like there was no tomorrow (probably because we didn't have them all that often). So, having being told a couple of years ago that I'm lactose and wheat intolerant, shortbread is now off limits. That was until I found Tesco's Free From Shortbread.......
I picked up a box of Tesco Free From Shortbread from Tesco (obviously!) for £1.39. The yellow & purple (Tesco's Free From range colours) box contained 12 shortbread biscuits, all wheat free, gluten free and milk free as well as suitable for vegetarians (but containing soya). Some 'free from' type products contain a lot of salt; these biscuits each contain 0.1g of salt or 2% of your guildlines daily amount, which isn't bad compared to some other 'free from' products.
So once I got the Tesco Free From Shortbread biscuits home, I decided I'd take 3 to work with me to eat mid morning for my elevenses. They looked like shortbread... homemade shortbread, maybe, but did they taste like shortbread? Biting into one, my first thoughts were "No, they don't taste like shortbread". I didn't think they tasted of much, to be honest! I took another bite into the biscuit and found that as I went through the biscuit the taste started to come through... a fake buttery kind of taste. I didn't like it at all. In fact, I struggled to finish the biscuit and couldn't face eating another!
When home from work, I decided to do a bit of a taste test as I thought maybe my taste buds had been altered from a non-dairy & non-wheat diet. I gave Mum a biscuit and asked her to eat it and let me know what she thought... She didn't like them either! Next up was Dad, he ate one and said there was nothing wrong with them, so I gave him the rest of the box! I think most men will eat anything edible, but my experience of these Tesco Free From Shortbread biscuits is that 2 out of 3 people don't like them!
So, I wouldn't recommend Tesco Free From Shortbread, so shortbread is still off limits for me.
Summary: Free from shortbread!
