Advantages: great sugar substitute

Disadvantages: dodgy texture can't be used in some recipes

I don't really use much sugar as I don't like tea or coffee and don't tend to add it to foods but I do find that sweetener is quite handy to have as it is extremely versatile and I am happier to add this to foods where I wouldn't have bothered with sugar.

Tesco granulated sweetener is 97p for 75g. I know 75g doesn't sound much but it is a large (18cm high and 8.5cm diameter) jar and will last a very long time.

The sweetener can be used in drinks and foods, sprinkled on to cereals or used in baking. When using in baking be aware that the sweetener is ideal for temperatures up to 180c. It can still be used for higher temperatures but will be less effective (not as sweet).

The first thing I notice about the sweetener is how light and fine it is, almost like a powder. It is a sweet, but very artificial taste just as you would expect from a sweetener although this isn't noticable when added to something.

Sweetener is great for baking and can be used in many things although there are some things that you need the texture of sugar for a recipe to work. For instance, my son loves making cherry crumble as it is easy to make and fun to prepare but you need sugar for the crumbly texture.

We get around this by using almonds in the recipe. We put flaked almonds in a bag and bash them with a rolling pin until they have a similar texture to sugar then add a little sweetener to taste. This gives a lovely flavour to the crumble and means we have to use less than half the amount of sugar that we would usually need.

Sweetener is great to use when cooking fruit that sometimes has a bitter taste, my mum gives me piles of apples and plums each summer and they always need a little extra help to bring out the sweetness.

Overall, I would highly recommend buying a jar of this as it is handy to keep in your cupboard and will almost certainly come in to use at some point.

Summary: Cannot totally replace sugar but is a great alternative in most cases.
