Advantages: Cheaper than buying at the cinema

Disadvantages: Tasteless

For anyone who has either seen Peter Kay live or have taken kids to the cinema you will know where I am coming from if I rant about the cost of pick and mix at the cinema which will often cost more than the entry price to see the film.

Hence the reason for this particular purchase which I saw as a way of reducing the cost of a cinema trip whilst keeping the ankle biters quiet during the never ending adverts and trailers that precede the main feature. As a plan is sorted of worked and cartinly saved some money.

Tesco Gummy mix comes in either a large round plastic box containing 500g of various jelly sweets in a variety of flavours and shapes or smaller 100g bags. The larger drum retails for £1.69 while the smaller bags are 38p although a 3 for £1 offer is currently available at my local Tesco.

It was the former that I purchased and this is packaged in a clear plastic drum with product information on the top. Opening the drum is by way of a plastic tear off strip and the airtight lid then lifts off easily and also can be re-sealed after use.

So to the contents, I said earlier that if comes in a variety of flavours and shapes actually after trying this product I could say that it does come in a variety of shapes but I'm not convinced about the flavours. In terms of shapes there are various sweets in the shapes of feet, guitars, dolphins, cars, half moons, guitars, coke bottles, teddy bears and other that I cannot recall. As it says on the box this is a gummy mix and there is no obvious theme to the shapes. These are all different sizes and some are a mix of jelly and marshmallow while the majority are just jelly.

In terms of texture these are very easy to eat and can be quite addictive, they are not over chewy however if left in the mouth they do take a while to dissolve.

If there is a weakness with this product it is in the taste, there are a variety of colours and hence you would expect different flavours, strawberry, orange, lime, lemon, blue? and the coke bottle you would assume would have a cola flavour. Unfortunately every one tastes the same, slightly bland and it is the texture that you notice and not the flavour. Personally I found that they left a rather waxy after taste to them which was a little unpleasant and they were very bland to say the least.

This product is obviously positioned as a rival to the Haribo range of gummy sweets and at £1.69 it is about 10p cheaper however on flavour it is a poor second. With Haribo you can taste the different flavours with this product you cannot. Still this is the view of an old wrinkly who is not the target market for this product so what do my two juvenile consumers think.

Well Miss C a 9-year-old sweet addict comments "I like the bears and the big feet because you get more of them", while Master N a more discerning 11 year old "They are a bit boring and taste the same". So there you have it a sample of two proves nothing conclusive other than neither were exactly vocal in their enjoyment although that did not stop them eating everything that was in their bag.

Finally there are no surprises on the ingredients, lots of sugar and E numbers but then what do you expect.

If I was rating these as an adult consumer they would be poor but then they are not aimed at adults hence they are only average as far as the kids are concerned then again even my kids may be out growing them in taste terms.

Thanks for reading and rating my review.
