Advantages: Pre-grated and handy

Disadvantages: Flavour is slightly nicer ungrated

In my opinion a Spaghetti Bolognese isn't complete without a generous helping of fresh Parmesan Cheese sprinkled on top. Of course, you can use Cheddar to serve the same purpose, but it doesn't have the delightfully rich flavour, and is a bit too creamy in nature to go with the mince.

Found in the chiller section at your local supermarket, Tesco's Italian Grated Parmesan comes in either a 100g tub (as shown in the picture), or a smaller 50g bag. The tub costs £1.12, and the bag retails at 81p.

The taste is very pleasing indeed - not quite as nice as some of the pricier Parmesan's I have tried in the past - but it's by no means a bad effort. The cheese is aged for a full twenty-four months in order to achieve a smooth and mature flavour, and the result is a flavorsome and rich taste.

If you're not keen on buying pre-grated cheese, then Tesco's un-grated block (or technically 'triangle') of Parmesan is a very nice tasting alternative - although it's basically exactly the same stuff, I always find it tastes better and slightly more mature in this form.

Parmesan is a very versatile cheese, and doesn't have to be used only as a topping for your pasta - I like making Parmesan Crisps which are really tasty and fairly easy to make. All you have to do is place a heaped dessert spoon of parmesan in a frying pan on a very low light, and smooth it down so it's about the size of a regular potato crisp. When the cheese is melted, firstly let the pan cool down, and then flip it over (you can't flip it over whilst warm, or you'll end up with a gooey mess). Finally, fry the reverse side for a couple of minutes, and Hey Presto! you're done - delicious.

Tesco's Italian Grated Parmesan is a tasty cheese which can be used in a variety of ways. The fact that it's pre-grated makes it very handy (not that grating cheese takes that long), and the resealable plastic container keeps everything nice and fresh - recommended, although I would generally prefer to buy the ungrated version.

I have to agree with you, I much prefer the solid block to grate at my leisure
