Advantages: A healthy snack with a great taste

Disadvantages: Short shelf life

If you would like to add a bit of a kick to your pitta bread, sandwiches, rice cakes, crispbreads, crudities etc. then look no further than the Tesco Jalapeno Houmous Dip. Being an avid lover of houmous I am always on the look out for new and exciting flavours to try.
Houmous is a very healthy food product originating from the Middle East. It is very high in protein, potassium, fibre, vitamin E and antioxidants. Consisting mainly of chickpeas and tahini (a sesame seed paste) these ingredients are crushed and blended to make a spread or dip and then flavoured using garlic and lemon juice. Nowadays there are many different variations of houmous but all derive from the original ingredients.

About the New Jalapeno Houmous

The new flavour from Tesco is packaged in a plastic tub with a sealed lid enclosed in a cardboard sleeve. All the nutritional information is printed on the sleeve along with drawings of green jalapeno peppers.
A beige coloured, grainy textured spread, this one is packed full of small chunks of both red and green jalapeno peppers. On opening the tub my first impressions are that it smells just like plain houmous, with the strong smell of chickpeas coming through and the bitter scent of lemon with a hint of garlic. I can't smell the chillies but can I taste them? My first taste was on my rice cakes, something with a bland taste that won't alter the taste of the houmous. Spread on thickly, just the way I like it, I immediately taste the sharp kick of the spicy chilli nipping at my tongue, it's really hot. What a magnificent flavour! A definite favourite for me, although I love any houmous, this one has that added kick giving your snack that little extra excitement! I found the nip of the chillies lingered in my mouth for about 15 minutes after eating.

What can you have with your Spicy Houmous Dip

I like to have mine on rice cakes or crispbreads, sandwiches or bagels. It's also great for dipping slices of carrots, cucumbers and baby corn in. The cool crunchy taste of the fresh vegetables is very well complimented by the sharp heat of the chilli dip. You can also use it as a dip for tortilla chips or breadsticks or why not trying dipping in slice of warm pitta bread.
All in all a great flavour of houmous, a bit different from the usual and a definite must for those of you who like a bit of spice in your food.

The only draw back is the short shelf life, it must be eaten within 2 days of opening and by the sell by date.
