Advantages: Really good meaty flavour, nice and moist
Disadvantages: Too many additives?
My fiancé's Mum bought these Lamb Quarter Pounders as they were on special offer at only £1 per box of 2 burgers (until 28 July 2009, I think their normal price is £2). She wanted to have a selection of ready-prepared BBQ food just in case we got some nice weather and these are kept in the freezer and can be cooked from frozen, so they're very handy to have in your freezer.
On the day we decided to have a BBQ there was some rain, but we persevered with our BBQ and got the umbrella out. If a downpour does stop your BBQ then you can always cook these under the grill for 20 - 25 minutes. On the BBQ they take the same amount of time and for best results they should be cooked from frozen.
I do like a nice lamb burger and these were pretty tasty. There was a good flavour of both mint and lamb, plus they were nice and moist. The mint flavour wasn't too synthetic, so it didn't taste like chewing gum or toothpaste! The ingredients list says they contain 45% lamb and 40% mutton, which explains why they have such a good flavour, as mutton generally has a stronger flavour than lamb. I don't think I've ever eaten mutton before, but it is definitely something I'd look out for in the future.
They held their shape well after being cooked on the BBQ and they weren't really greasy, which is a benefit of cooking on a BBQ as any fat drips away. Surprisingly they did end up looking just like the picture on the box!
Although I did really enjoy these burgers, reading the rather long ingredients list does put me off a little bit. There are quite a few additives which I'm sure aren't good for you. Burgers are so easy to make from scratch and I would rather make my own, so I know what's going into them. But as a standby for the BBQ or even just a quick meal they're perfect.
Contains:
Wheat, Gluten & Soya
Lamb (45%), Mutton (40%), Wheat Flour, Onion, Soya Protein Isolate, Sugar, Lamb Fat, Salt, Wheat Glucose Syrup, Acidity Regulators (Sodium Diacetate, Malic Acid), Corn Starch, Yeast Extract, Mint (0.1%), Tomato Powder, Garlic Powder, Malt Vinegar Powder, Cornflour, Onion Powder, Spearmint (0.03%), Colour (Paprika Extract), Black Pepper, Barley Malt Extract, Natural Flavouring (Spearmint Oil, Mint Extract), Turmeric Extract, Yeast.
Summary: Definitely a keeper.
