Advantages: Slightly nutty, not too strong a wholemeal flavour

Disadvantages: ----------

Although I usually eat white pitta bread, I somehow managed to pick up a packet of wholemeal ones in Tesco recently and they've completely changed my views! These large sized own brand pitta breads are delicious and I think the bulk of my pitta purchases will be these from now on.

The main thing I like about them is their half and half flavour, by this I mean the pittas have a rather subtle wholemeal flavour which doesn't completely overwhelm the bread as a packet of Waitrose pittas I ate some time ago did. The strength of the Waitrose pittas was so intense that it was hard to find a filling which I could actually taste over the wholemeal flavour!

These Tesco ones are just right, they have a slightly nutty flavour and also taste deliciously malty. As I said though, the wholemeal aspect of them is certainly not overdone and I love the fact that I can treat them as white pittas as the flavour will compliment most fillings. I actually find that egg mayonnaise tastes much better on these wholemeal pitta breads because the slight nuttiness of the bread brings out the flavour and creaminess of the egg.

I always grill mine for a minute or two and have been impressed with how well they puff out once toasted slightly, the edge is easy to cut through to form a tidy and roomy pocket ready for filling. The bread doesn't stick to itself inside the pocket and I haven't yet had one fall to pieces as I try to stuff it. These pittas also hold most foodstuffs comfortably, although as with any bread of this type the wetter the filling the more chance there is of it leaking through the bottom of the pitta or even the bottom edge giving way completely, dumping your dinner in your lap! As I found when I stuffed one of these pittas with a particularly saucy Bolognese last week!

I find the large size of them makes these pittas a little more filling than their smaller counterparts, also the difference in size isn't that great in all honestly and these are simply a little longer. I find the size ideal for sliding a whole cooked chicken breast into and this makes for a hearty meal when combined with some salad and a nice complimentary sauce.

Each of these tasty pitta breads contain 145 calories and just 0.2g of saturated fat, this is less than two slices of bread and the pitta seems to be just as filling so I shall certainly buy these again as it makes such a lovely change from dull white bread.

Summary: A lovely change from plain bread for my lunchtime sandwiches.

Pitta bread is a wonderful and wholly versatile idea. They're great when toasted or when opened up to act like mini bread pockets. I always baulk at the prices though, how much are these ones?
