Advantages: moist, tasty, a bit healthier than most cakes
Disadvantages: none
I popped into my local Tesco Express after work today, for something quick and easy for tea tonight. After choosing something I found myself hovering around the small cake selection in this tiny store. I fancied a cake, but had nothing specific in mind so I spotted something that looked appealing, however, out of the corner of my eye I saw these cake slices. I opted for these because they were by far the healthier choice. A box of 6 cake slices cost me £1.02.
***The packaging***
Is a white cardboard box with the words light choices scrawled across a good portion of it. This really works at drawing us in as it is very clearly written, and also makes us think that they are better for us (than most of the cakes on show). The box also has a picture of a plate full of these delicious looking cake slices. Inside the box, is a clear, thin plastic tray that is sectioned into six and each cake slice sits perfectly inside each section, the tray is also about 1cm taller than the cake slices this makes it a bit tricky to take out the cake without getting all sticky from trying to maneuver the cake, so as to lift it out. The tray containing the cake slices is also wrapped in a clear plastic film to seal in the freshness.
***The Product***
Each cake slice is approximately 1 inch tall, 1 inch wide and 2 inches long. The box describes the cake as "Moist carrot and Orange cake slices topped with yogurt icing". I think that is very accurate . The only difference between the photo on the box and the actual cake is that the the yogurt icing on the cake was perhaps a little too runny, or not properly set when the slices were cut, as the icing had cracks all over it. It makes it look a bit less appealing but it does not take anything away from the taste.
***The Tasting***
I find a lot of carrot cakes to be too dry, but this one is perfectly moist, so much so that the bottom of the cake is quite visibly sticky. The sponge is soft and springy. The yogurt icing is a thin layer, it is very sweet though so a thin layer is ample. You can clearly taste the orange and carrot, mostly orange though. The cake is textured with coconut and orange zest.
Overall these are very nice cake slices, one is nice, two is perfect, any more and it would become too sickly I think. I tried to have one, but I had to have a second and then felt happy with that.
***The Facts***
The good thing about the Tesco Light Choices range is that the points value shown on each pack, does coincide with the Weight Watchers Points system. Each slice is one and a half points. These slices contain milk, wheat, gluten and egg.
Each slice contains:
95kcals
13.3g sugar
0.7g fat
0.4g saturates
0.1g salt
I recommend trying these if you are looking for a little something for your sweet tooth, the fact that it is lower in calories is an added bonus.
Summary: Very nice
