Advantages: Cheap and low in fat
Disadvantages: Status
BACKGROUND
Subsequent to my purchase of peanut butter fron Sainsbury's, I decided to check out Tesco's version of the stuff. My 340g jar cost 70p, not much difference between Tesco's and Sainsbury's. The purchase was on the 15 March 2007, the useby date Nov 2007 plenty of time to enjoy it.
THE PRODUCT
The jar is made from recyclable glass and the peanut butter is (was) the produce of the Netherlands. The jar has a blue top with a label full of information wrapped around it. It is suitable for vegetarians. Also as with many Tesco items they outline categories of content (in this case per teaspoon - typically 15g) in a clearly defined table eg calories, sugar, fat, saturates, sat.
NUTRITIONAL VALUES
87% peanuts, sunflour oil, dextrose, vegetable fat, salt.
THE EXPERIENCE
The tub is a convenient and easy to handle, trhe screw top comes off easily and the foil covering is easily cut away. After reading the label you get the feeling you are eating something good.
THE TASTE EXPERIENCE
I often spread mine on chocolate biscuits (over indulgence) for that overpowering taste of peanut followed by the seductive flavour of the chocolate. On its own it tends to be rather dry. This is not a problem on biscuits or bread. The flavour is creamy and smooth. The after taste (or follow on) is a little too salty but not too much of a problem.
MY OPINION
As with Sainsbury's own brand a cheap alternative to other types of spread. It might even get a more value for money with larger sizes, I did not notice other sizes in my Tesco's metro.
Summary: A useful spread, full of goodness, value for money.
