Advantages: Wonderful taste, relatively inexpensive
Disadvantages: You might not be able to stop eating it!
I have to start this review by saying that I really wish that I hadn't discovered Tesco Mandarin cheesecake ice cream because I really am addicted now! I can't go into Tesco without picking up at lease two tubs to put in my trolley!
So, what is it about this amazing ice cream? On first glance it looks very similar to the carte d'or range of ice cream. It comes in a similar oval shaped 1 litre tub. Once opened, you see that it is an orange flavoured ice cream with a mandarin sauce and little biscuit like crumble pieces. As with all good ice creams these are all arranged in quite eye catching swirls. You know that it is going to taste delicious before it even gets anywhere near your mouth - it just looks so good!!
So what does it taste like? I think that I would be hard pushed to say that it does actually taste like mandarin cheesecake but it does come close. It has a really sumptuous taste and melts in the mouth.
The texture is quite smooth but also a little rough as in every mouth full you get some of the biscuity crumbly things. The combination of the three different components really does work well together.
As with all tesco products you are told what every serving contains. For each 55g serving there is:
100 calories
11.5g sugar
4.9g fat
3.4g saturates
0.6g salt
You are also told what each of these are in terms of your daily allowance. For example the saturates are 17% of your daily allowance which seems quite high whereas the calories are only 5%. This was good news to me, being someone who makes a half-hearted attempt at counting calories, but I guess if I'm honest I don't restrict myself to a 55g portion! The trouble is that it is actually quite hard to calculate without actually weighing your portion, because we are only told that the total for the tub is 1 litre - and I'm not sure how grams abd litres relate to each other!
The main ingredients of the icecream are only rehydrated skimmed milk, water and mandarin, although the sauce and biscuit pieces have a variety of ingredients.
There is advice about allergies on the tub telling you that it contains milk, wheat and gluten but there are no nuts.
One of the best things about this icecream is the cost. I said at the beginning that it was similar to carte d'or but actually costs about £1 less especially if you take advantage of Tesco's long standing offer to buy two for £3! A single tub costs about £1.60.
All in all this is a wonderful tasting dessert - it looks good, tastes great and won't break the bank. But be warned, if you're anything like me, one 55gram serving won't be enough!
Summary: A great tasting dessert
