Advantages: Just 47p a box, tasty and of a decent quality, nice breadcrumb coating

Disadvantages: Seasoning could be better, the fish fingers shrink during cooking

Before I start this review please let me assure you that my Value hunting doesn't usually extend to my granddaughters' food, but in this instance they actually ask me to buy these cheap fish fingers as they think the breadcrumb coating is much better even than the extremely high priced Birds Eye Fish Fingers. At 47p for ten fish fingers, the Value range have really come up trumps with this product in my opinion and once you get past the internal stigma of buying such 'cheap fish' then you'll realise you're certainly onto a winner with this buy.

The fish fingers are slightly smaller than other more expensive brands, this isn't terribly obvious while they are still frozen but they do shrink down somewhat during the cooking process which is worth remembering if you're cooking them for a fish finger sandwich as you may want to pop an extra one in to ensure you have enough filling for your bread!

They cook in the oven in around 15 minutes, which is my preferred method of cooking them, although my daughter also buys these fish fingers but she grills hers and apparently this is not only quicker but also stops some of the shrinkage that occurs in the oven. I dare say they could successfully be deep fried too, although who deep fries anymore?

The breadcrumb coating is a bright orange and this, if I'm honest, makes the fish fingers look very cheap. It doesn't affect the flavour in any way though and I think the fairly strong flavour of these breadcrumbs compliments the fish really well, a dash of salt and vinegar won't go amiss though as the fish fingers aren't terribly well seasoned and likewise a dollop of ketchup will add some flavour and moistness to the otherwise fairly dry fish fingers.

The fish is merely called 'white minced fish' in the ingredients list, I'd assume it was a mixture of Pollock and some unknown species as the fish fingers have a nice rounded white fish flavour which indicates that Tesco haven't used completely cheap fish. Again, the seasoning is an issue and personally I find the fish inside to be rather bland in flavour although once I'd doused them in salt and vinegar this ceased to be a problem. This fish is fairly well packed into it's fish finger shape, this makes the fish fingers seems very substantial to eat and I was pleased not to find flakes of fish all over my two year old granddaughter's blouse after she'd eaten her dinner.

Overall I'm going to give these four stars. I'm not a huge fish finger eater myself and find these perfectly acceptable, admittedly they are rather less attractive than if you had spent upwards of £2 on Birds Eye fish fingers and the seasoning is sadly lacking - but at the end of the day it's my granddaughters' who ultimately have the final word on these and they absolutely adore them. The two big girls each have four fish fingers and their little sister has two which is perfect as it means I can throw away the box after cooking their meal, equalling less boxes rattling around in my freezer containing just one or two fish fingers!

Summary: The only fish fingers I buy nowadays.

I agree, they are quite bland. However, a good splash of Ketchup, and throwing them between some sliced bread helps. lol. :) Great review!
