Fifty Percent Fat, Fifty Percent Something Else (Tesco Value Mince)

Disadvantages: half fat so not good value.

I don't usually like to buy frozen mince because it just doesn't taste as good as the fresh stuff. I also like my mince to be in lumps, if you know what I mean, instead just bits in gravy.

However when I saw the Tesco Value frozen minced beef at £1.48 for a 750 gram pack, I decided to give it a try although it does look pretty basic in its plastic bag.

When I opened it, I must admit that it looked reasonable enough, so I friend off some chopped onions in a little oil, and then added the minced in my usual manner.

The amount of fat that appeared in a puddle in the bottom of the pan was unbelievable. I actually had to get some kitchen roll and mop it up after pouring as much as I could off the meat. If I had to estimate it I would say that it was fifty percent fat.

I did complete the cooking and eat the meal but I must say that it was greasy and had an odd taste to it. It was a bit gritty to eat and even disguised in a shepherd's pie with gravy over it, I could not say that I enjoyed it.

To my way of thinking this is not value for money because you can only eat half what you pay for once you pour off the fat, so even if you don't mind your mince like this, you are actually paying £1.48 for fifty-fifty minced beef and fat.

When I start to think exactly what might have been minced into this ultra cheap meat, I am totally put off. I took another look at the bag this came in and it is 'Tesco Value Mince'. It doesn't say 'beef' on the bag. Mmm! I wonder.

No, Tesco Value frozen mince, or should I say fifty percent fat minced meat is not something I would ever buy again.

Summary: I would say buy the better stuff and use half as much.
