Advantages: Creamy mascarpone and rocket filling, tasty, similar to Kiev's

Disadvantages: Filling started to seep out at end of cooking, lots of fat

With the recent warm weather (short as it was!), I didn’t feel like cooking a roast dinner over the weekend, so during my weekly shop in Tesco’s I bought their Mascarpone & Rocket Chicken Breast Fillets. My husband loves Garlic Kiev’s and as these look quite similar, I thought that that this would make a nice change. With the Breast Fillets costing just £2.50, it was decided there and then that this is what we would be eating for our tea.

Mascarpone & Rocket Chicken Breast Fillets are made up of two skinless, boneless chicken breast fillets, filled with mascarpone and rocket, coated with crisp breadcrumbs. You will find them in the frozen section; it weights 340g and serves two. They are packaged in a cardboard box that is black and there is a fancy looking picture of the fillets on the cover. The fillets themselves come in a silver foil tray with a clear film lid.

If you are into dieting, then this is not for you as one fillet contains a whooping 39% of your daily intake of saturates and 21% of fat. What is most concerning is that one fillet contains 15% of your daily intake of salt!

Each chicken breast contains:
Calories = 420 (21%)
Sugar = 1.4g (2%)
Fat = 14.3g (21%)
Saturates = 7.7g (a very high 39%)
Salt = 0.9g (a very high 15%)

When you cut into the fillets the breadcrumb topping is very crispy and light. You are faced with around 2cms of chicken breast with the mascarpone and rocket filling oozing out onto your plate. The filing is quite thick and is very creamy with lots of little green bits which is the Rocket. Despite the high salt content, the filling did not taste as salty as I was expecting. I also liked the fact that the fillets didn’t have a strong after taste that would repeat on you later on!

Unlike my husband I am not a fan of chicken Kiev’s as they remind me of the time when I had a really bad hangover on New Year’s Day quite a few years ago and my Mum had cooked Garlic Kiev’s which turned my stomach! Since then I haven’ been able to eat them. Considering the Mascarpone fillets are similar I have to say that I liked them and would buy these again. I was slightly disappointed that 10 minutes before the end of cooking, the filling was seeping into the foil tray and went a little crusty which meant that my fillet wasn’t as creamy as I hoped.

Regardless of my disappoinment that the filling started to seep out whilst cooking, these chicken breasts were very tasty. The Mascarpone wasn't overpowering and the hint of Rocket was a nice alternative to the usual herbs found in a kiev. The breadcrumb topping was quite crispy and the chicken breast actually tasted of chicken and didn't taste processed (which makes a change).

Cooking instructions:
There is only one way to cook the mascarpone fillets and that it is to oven them from frozen. Remove outer packing and the film lid. Place in the oven at 200 C /400 F Gas mark 6 for 40 minutes. I have a fan assisted oven and found it took 45 minutes to cook. After this time the chicken breasts had cooked right through and the topping was golden brown in colour.

In my opinion: Tesco Mascarpone & Rocket Chicken Breast Fillets make a nice alternative to Kiev’s, however they do contain a lot of fat and saturates which are bad for you. It serves two, however if you want to be really greedy you can have the two fillets all to yourself. The filling is very nice and creamy and you can actually taste the Mascarpone and Rocket.

Ingredients:
Chicken Breast (67%), Mascarpone Full Fat Soft Cheese (15%), Breadcrumb, Parmigiano Reggiano Cheese, Rocket (1.5%), Modified Maize Starch, Maize Starch, Salt, Garlic Puree, Stabiliser (Guar Gum).
Breadcrumb contains: Wheat Flour, Vegetable Oil, Yeast, Olive Oil and Salt.

Allergy Advice:
Contains milk, wheat, gluten and may contain traces of nuts.
