Advantages: Taste great, less hassle than making your own

Disadvantages: High fat content, more expensive than buying them in their dried form

Prawn crackers are a prawn flavoured crispy snack very popular to eat alongside a Chinese meal. We used to buy prawn crackers in their dried form from our local Chinese supermarket and fry them to get them to puff up into the prawn crackers you get from the Chinese takeaway. However recently after we ran out of prawn crackers we saw these in Tesco and thought we would give them a try. They cost 70p for a 60g bag.

The prawn crackers come ready to eat in a 60g foil packet. If you have never had them they are white usually oval shaped snacks which taste of prawn. These prawn crackers are really nice. They are crispy as you bite into them but then they melt into your mouth and are nice and light. You can taste the lovely prawn flavour and they are not too greasy which sometimes prawn crackers can be.

I like these they are nice, quicker, easier and less mess than making your own at home as you have to fry them in oil. The downside is that they do have a high fat content but whether you buy them or make them they are not good for you, however in moderation I think they are ok and they make a really nice addition to a Chinese meal at home. It is cheaper to buy them in their dried form and fry them yourselves but these aren't too bad value for money considering the time and effort you save. I will certainly be buying them again and keeping a packet in the cupboard.

Interestingly my husband last year had to go to Hong Kong for a month with work and asked his colleagues there about Prawn Crackers and they had never heard of them! Whether they are only popular in certain areas of China or whether they are a food developed for us Westerners I'm not sure! Whatever it is they still taste good and I enjoy them with a Chinese meal.

For those who suffer from allergies the prawn crackers contain egg and shellfish. The ingredients are Tapioca Flour, Vegetable Oil, Prawns, Sugar, Pasteurised Egg and Salt.

I lived in China for years, and certainly never had a prawn cracker in all that time. I always presumed they were a Hong Kong thing...apparently not!!
