Advantages: Family size, easy to heat or eat cold and is value for money

Disadvantages: Soggy, quite bland

I adore quiche and simply can't be bothered to make my own so I occasionally buy them which is what happened today! Not only is it usually £1.59 (or if on offer 2 for £3.00 quite often) this was actually in the reduced section of a refrigerator in store priced at 49p! Bargain I thought as I snatched it almost off an old lady and ran away with it. That was tea for me sorted lol

The Packaging....

Square cardboard burgundy coloured box and on the front I'm told it's Tesco Quiche Lorraine which is 'Smoked bacon and cheddar cheese combined with a creamy egg custard in a shortcrust pastry'. There is a picture on the front of the quiche, the size is stated (400g) and the display to and best before date are stamped on clearly. On the back I'm again told what is is, how to cook, freeze and defrost it, ingredients and allergy advice are given, nutritional information is listed as are contact details for Tesco and there is a bar-code on one of the sides of the box. Simple, straightforward packaging that's easy to understand this is!

To Cook It....

Can be served hot or cold but if you want it hot it needs to go in the oven 40-45 minutes if it's frozen or 20-25 minutes if it isn't in the centre of a pre- heated oven on 200C/400F or Gas Mark 6 in the middle of the oven in the tray it comes in (foil) on a baking tray.

Me Eating It....

I couldn't wait so I didn't cook mine which according to the box is ok and I like mine cold anyway to be honest. It's large (family size and would give 4 decent servings), the edging is a light golden shortcrust pastry which is fluted and the top is a golden 'set' skin with bits of what appears to be bacon poking through giving it texture and the whole thing has a slight wobble to it. It has no smell, cuts easily..... and then falls apart on you.

For me this is a soggy offering and maybe best heated up. The filling is bland, not all that creamy though you can taste mild cheese and then an overall taste of bacon which is quite salty but your hard pushed to find any bacon pieces when devouring it really, you can simply taste that's it in there somewhere.

It's a soggy egg custard filling (though there is loads of it to be fair) but it makes the base of the pastry very soggy indeed and difficult to handle making a mess on you and on the plate if your not careful. The pastry on the bottom is pale white and doesn't taste really it just appears to be there to get us to eat the filling part! It isn't vile but it is disappointing and for me lacks flavour.

Overall....

I like the deepness of the quiche and the overall size of it. It's good quality but a bit bland to me. All there is in it is cheese and bacon and I soon got bored of the gloopy, slightly whipped texture. As I have said I won't argue that it's cheap and nasty cos it isn't, it's generous in size and amounts etc but I would appreciate a little more taste of cheese and some lumps of bacon and some flipping taste in general would be nice! This isn't for me and I prefer Marks & Spencer's one's which is where I'm going back to tomorrow lol.

These are better heated as you suspected - strangely enough if you heat it first and let it go cold it's better than straight from the box. Good review however
