Advantages: Quick and easy meal
Disadvantages: Tastes terrible with an awful consistency
Only a few weeks into summer, and my family is already getting bored with salads! It is so hot at the moment, that I can't even consider cooking hot food, so I thought that I would bulk up a salad, and make it a bit different from the usual ham or chicken with a slice of quiche. I didn't have the time or the inclination to make my own, so I opted for tesco's ready made option.
Tesco's have a long term offer on quiches, where you can get two for £3; otherwise they are around £1.74 each. I really didn't want two, but I can't resist an offer, so I picked up two Quiche Lorraines. This quiche is found in the chiller department and comes in a pink box with a picture of the quiche on the front, also some nutritional information, best before date and a description of the quiche ("Smoked bacon and cheddar cheese combined with a creamy egg custard in a short crust pastry") which lets you know exactly what to expect.
On the rear of the box you are told the ingredients, weight (400g), contact information, allergy advice and a more concise list of nutritional information. You are also given cooking instructions if you want to eat it hot, and also advice on how to freeze. Inside the box, the quiche is kept fresh in a foil tray.
The quiche filling is a pale yellow colour that has been nicely browned on top. The pastry looks a bit too dark and crumbly for my liking, but I divide it into quarters and serve it up to my family. The consistency of the filling is not quite right; It is very light, but it is too mushy and slimy and it does not seem as though it has been cooked for long enough. The pastry is too crumbly and dry around the edges, and has a slightly burnt flavour. It is a bit soggy and claggy on the bottom and sticks to the roof of your mouth in an unpleasant way. It has a cheesy flavour, that is not too overpowering, but all that you can taste is the smoked bacon, which leaves an unpleasant aftertaste. The bacon is not very high quality, and almost every morsel that I had was all gristle, after two forkfuls I began to dread what would be in the next mouthful, so I left the rest. I am met with mixed reviews from the family, but the general feeling is that we don't like it, and can we go back to ham next time please?!
One quarter of quiche (100g) contains 265 calories and a massive 17.3g of fat - 7.8g of which is saturated. If I am going to put this much fat in my body, there are much tastier ways of doing it in my opinion. I am seriously regretting buying two boxes now, and I know that the other one will languish in the back of the fridge until it passes its use by date and I can legitimately throw it away!
I have never been a fan of quiche and I'm not sure why, but quiche feels to me as though it belongs in the 70's. I grew up in the 80's but I can remember my Mum serving quiche up in a cold buffet along with cheese and pineapple on sticks, vol au vents and other 70's finger food, when it was all new and trendy! In future, I will stick to my instincts a bit more and avoid quiche at all costs!
I really don't want to give this product any stars, but because I have to give at least one it will be for price and convenience, and they are it's only redeeming features! I can't believe that Tesco's could mess up a simple quiche quite so badly, and I definitely would never recommend it.
Summary: Make your own!

- 09/07/09 I guess the disadvantages then make the advantages of being "a quick and easy meal" completely obsolete, lol! |

- 03/07/09 I agree....this is disgusting! Who the hell passed it through Tesco's quality control? |

- 02/07/09 soggy pasty is never good. Sounds like the pastry case wasn't blind baked first. |
