Rocky Road Ice Cream - Nothing like the cake! (Tesco Rocky Road Premium Ice Cream)

Advantages: Good price if on offer, nothing else I can find though

I am a big fan of Ice Creams, I only need to see a hint of sunshine and I am longing for a bowl of ice cream. I have always loved the branded ice cream flavours such as Ben and Jerrys or Haagen Daz but these always appear expensive and are more of a luxury item in my trolley, I tend to just go with a Tesco own flavour so I was happy to find an offer for a new 'Rocky Road' Ice Cream, a welcome change from vanilla and it had good packaging... here is my thoughts on the product.

The Ice Cream being the Rocky Road flavour jumped out because I am a big fan of the Tesco Rocky Road tray bake, Ice Cream and chocolate, you can't beat that, or so I thought!

The Ice cream comes in a 1 litre plastic tub and looks very similar to the previously mentioned higher quality brands. The tub is brown in colour and has cream and beighe writting with the name of the product on the front of the tub. On the reverse of the ice cream packaging is nutirtional information, ingredients and storage instructions (Who doesn't know to keep it in the freezer!) The lid of the ice cream is quite difficult to open as it has a plastic seal. I know this is necessary for health and safety reasons but it really did need alot of strength to open the tub.

Once I finally got into the product it looked delicious, a mixture of vanilla and chocolate ice cream with flavours of marshmallow all covered in a dark chocolate sauce alongside chunks of chocolate and marshmallows, however when I scooped myself some Ice cream out I was a little disappointed with the product, especially since I am a big fan of the tray bake.

The chocolate ice cream that they had used was quite watery in flavour and as I prefer milk chocolate the dark chocolate chunks in this prduct were a little harsh on what I prefer. I am also a fan of marshmallows but the product did not contain msny of these chunks, they really were few and far between and the flavour of them just disappeared into the ice cream.

The chocolate sauce that appeared to have covered the product and was so visable on opening ran into nothing as you worked your way down the tub. When I looked a little closer at the ingredients I can see why the product was not so sweet and filling as other ice creams. The ice cream contained partially reconstituted skimmed milkemulsifyers and flavourings. Ice cream is not menat to be good for you and I prefer a smaller amount that has used semi-skimmed milk and more generous helpings of cream.

In conclusion, I don't think I will be buying the product again, especially as at full price a tub is £2.99. I think I would rather splash out on a branded tub as a treat. It is nothing like Rocky Roas cakes and even though we finished the tub, it had more to do with not liking waste than really enjoying the product.

Summary: Go low-budget ice cream or top end of the market, this fails in the middle.
