Now I'm not going to beg, but I really do think you ought to approach this review in a very sombre mood with a bucket load of sympathy. Why? Because poor old little me is unable to indulge in the gooey, silky, gorgeously smooth mouth wateringly fabulous cocoa founded substance known to most of you as breakfast-lunch-midafternoon-supper-snack CHOCOLATE.

123....ahhh!

There, I have finally admitted it - chocolate has the same effect on me as 12 pints of best bitter has on most. (will leave you to fill in the details!) Why all this digging for goodwill? Well a side effect of this sorry discovery is that I am always on the search for a satisfying replacement. It has to be said that I have had a great deal of fun doing so. Most everything from diet coke to toffees to houmus to lemon cake have been on the receiving end of my addictive searching but all short lived....... UNTIL..... enter stage left:

TESCO'S MALTED MILK BISCUITS!

It began with the attractive blue packaging calling to me across the aisle. Blue is inspirational of course as it smacks of "relaxing and refreshing" rather than "stuff your face!"

There is even a handy picture on the side to entice you in and some handy info to convince you that the product is worthy of your consumption. Apparently the packet contains 200g has a "great taste, now with 10% less salt". That's it - they have landed in my trolley!

I am very restrained and wait until I'm home before hacking my way in. The packet has a tiny peel strip which doesn't work and a flap on the folded seam which proves a fruitless avenue too. So, out with the carving knife (good job I didn't attempt this in the car park!) and I'm in.

Approx 20 biccies are now accessible as the whole side has come away, but of course these need to be air tight so out with the flowery tin - not before I have snaffled a handful of course and put on the kettle.

While awaiting my cuppa I have chance to read the packet and discover that my eagerly anticipated snack contains:

Wheat Flour, Vegetable Oil, Sugar, Malt Extract (contains Gluten), Glucose Syrup, Dried Whole Milk, Raising Agents (Ammonium Bicarbonate, Sodium Bicarbonate), Salt, Flavouring (contains Milk).

Allergy Advice....
Does contain milk (which I'm very glad of considering the name!), wheat and gluten.

Is it a fruit portion?

Sadly , no, although I did read carefully just in case. It does have just 45 calories and 0.9g saturated fat, as well as 2g sugar which could be a lot worse so don't feel too bad (unless you're already on your 3rd pack!)

Cuppa ready, biscuit aloft.....

- dunking test:
Quite solid, not at all bad providing not too much was dunked at once.

- taste test:
It has raised decorated edges which are a fab texture for nibbling round. The biccie itself is snappy and not over sweet. This is a good thing taste wise but also means you can kid yourself that you are not eating too much sugar and have another few! They had a slightly shortbreadish texture and dissolved on the tongue in a very pleasing way.

- keep test
If you are very strong willed and succeed in not munching your way through the whole packet in one sitting these keep well in an air tight tin for maybe a week (probably more.... but hey! I can't eat chocolate okay!)

Verdict:

A fab, tasty, dunkable, not-too-sweet, light-textured, well-packaged-apart-from-early-access, cheap, fairly-ok-for-you pack of biscuits (ha ha - you could have skipped the blurb and found out the answer here!!)

Do try some sometime -they're only 40p - but remember my sorry predicament and please leave a pack for me!

Thanks for reading.
