Tesco small Melton Mowbray pork pie
Advantages: Available at Tescos (If you really want to sample one of these)
Disadvantages: Exess gelatine, oily, poor tasting......... and on, and on
I have to admit that I am more of a savoury than a sweet person. I know that pastries are really bad for you but there are times when only a sausage roll or a pork pie will do. It was during one of these times that I picked up a small Melton Mowbray pork pie form Tescos.
This pork pie is 145g in weight, so it is little more than a party sized one, and it cost £0.74.
The pork pie is wrapped in dark blue shiny paper with "Melton Mowbray" written in italics all over it. The packaging is understated and boring. Most packaging is bright and bold in order to catch the public's attention, but this is not the case with this product. In fact, whilst looking in the refrigerated section it was quite difficult to tell what this product was.
The summary of the nutritional information is clearly displayed on the front of the product and the rest of the information is on a sticker on the back of the product in a font so small that you virtually need a microscope to read it.
The primary ingredients of this pork pie are wheat flour, pork, pork fat, pork gelatine, vegetable oil, potato starch, egg, white pepper amongst others.
I should note that the pork content is very low at 26%.
Each 145g pork pie contains:
1) 535 calories
2) 4.2g of sugar
3) 35.1g of fat (50% of the total recommended daily intake)
4) 13.2g of saturates (66% of the total recommended daily intake)
5) 1.6g of salt (20% of the total daily intake).
These pork pies are seriously unhealthy and bad for you, and let's face it a small pork pie is easily devoured by one person in one go. All aspects are so high that this should be a meal in itself but it merely makes up part of a meal.
This product carries an allergy warning in that it contains wheat, gluten and eggs, so if you have any problems with these then this pie is unsuitable for you.
This product does not contain nuts, however.
As far as pork pies go I was very disappointed and this was diabolical.
The pastry crust was very thick and it was too moist, which I can only assume is die to the amount of fat and oil in the product. I could almost feel the grease drip down my lips as I took the first bite. It was awful. I could definitely feel the grease on my hand after I had eaten it.
In between the filling and the pastry crust was a layer of pork gelatine. This is typical of all pork pies, however, I have never encountered so much of it in one pork pie before. There was far too much and it is not necessary. It got to the point where I had to pull the gelatine out of the pie and throw it away. Not good etiquette I know but it was necessary.
The filling left a lot to be desired. It has got a low pork content but I wonder how they bulk it up and make the rest of the filling. There were some gristly bits in the filling, some of which were very chewy. The consistency of this was not good.
****Would I recommend this pork pie?****
I would definitely not recommend this pork pie. I thought that Melton Mowbray pork pies were meant to be the best, but if they all taste like this then they have a reputation that they clearly should not have.
In my opinion this is a pork pie that is best left alone.
Summary: I would recommend sticking to sausage rolls.
