Advantages: The price perhaps!
Disadvantages: Bad taste, full of fat, little pork actually used... I could go on!
have said many times before that I will always be a sweet toothed person as opposed to a savoury one. However, occasionally I do get the munchies for savoury foods; this normally happens when I am doing my weekly shop, starving hungry and anything will do to satisfy my appetite. A few weeks back I decided to treat my partner and me to a Tesco Melton Mowbray Pork Pie. I had not had one in a long time and suddenly decided to try one again.
I opted to buy 2 small pork pies, they cost 74p each which made a total of £1.48, the size of these being 145g each. I could have chosen to buy the large pork pie at the cost of £1.92 but which comes in the 440g weight but I decided that 2 smaller versions would suit us fine so in the trolley they went and I carried on with the shop!
The packaging on these pork pies is really simple, they did not catch my eye at all, it was just that I was looking in the chillier cabinet for a little 'treat' for us and they were alongside the sausage rolls which I had my eye on! If you were looking for the pork pie specifically then you would have difficulty finding it as it really is very simply packaging.
The packaging is blue in colour and is made of a thick paper like substance that almost has a gloss over it, making it smooth to touch. The front of the pork pies has the Tesco logo on and the name of the product; Melton Mowbray Pork Pie, all of this is in white writing against the blue background, not very clear at all. The front also gives you some pieces of nutritional information and the best before date.
If you turn the product around, the back has a label on which lists ingredients and further nutritional information.
The pork pie is really easy to open, the pie is sealed at the base of the product and all you need to do is break the seal and the pie is ready to be eaten.
As the pork pies that I purchased were the smaller size they did not need cutting and were ready to eat straight away. The pastry looked a nice brown / golden colour and not burned at all unlike some pork pies that I have seen in the past. There were places on the outer layer of pastry that looked almost glossy in colour. I then went to take my first mouthful and I have to say that I was left feeling a little disappointed with this product.
The pastry was quite crusty and did not really taste like pastry. It was very greasy and did not taste nice at all. It was quite thin and crumbly, not at all what I expected when I was looking at the pork pie. When it came to the centre of the pie and the pork I was again left feeling disappointed. There was not an awful lot of pork in the pie and when it came to tasting it the meat was really chewy. Not being a massive meat fan anyway I was put off and did not eat much more as the meat was really chewy, not a good texture at all.
When I looked at the pork content in this pie I was horrified to see that thee is only 30% pork used, what the rest of the filling was made from I dread to think.
A few pieces of nutritional information on the product are as follows (Per serving)
Calories ~ 540
Sugar ~ 2.5g
Fat ~ 37.4g
Saturates ~ 14.5g
Salt ~ 1.6g
The fat content in this pie is ridiculously high and I was stunned to see how bad for you it really is.
In summary, I won't be buying this pork pie again. The taste is not impressive, what with the greasy pastry that is way to thin and the lack of filling. What filling there is I was shocked at the pork percentage. No snack will ever be good for you but the fat content on this is shocking.
Sorry tesco, I like many of your products but this is one I won't be returning to I am afraid.
2 out of 5 stars me, and that's only because the price was low!
Thanks for reading.
Summary: Never again!
