Advantages: Delicious and filling, reasonably priced, a lovely cheese and leek filling
Disadvantages: Not so good on bread and butter I suspect!
One of the nicest smoked haddock fishcakes I've eaten recently is courtesy of Mr Tesco, they come in packs of two and cost £1.15. I do make my own fishcakes and love my own, but can't always be bothered to make them from scratch if I'm honest and I find these a very tasty alternative.
As you probably know by now I'm dieting and on the lookout for foods that I can enjoy, and that also are not too high in calories and fat. These fishcakes fit the bill nicely because they have a nice strong flavour, are a good size and contain just 3 Weight Watchers points.
These fishcakes are coated in a nice orange breadcrumb similar to what you'd find on fishfingers, the breadcrumbs are nice and crunchy and have a subtle cheese flavour which has been absorbed from the inside of the fishcake as it's cooking.
Inside it's a good ration of potato and smoked haddock, there's plenty of fish there but personally I feel the flakes could be larger as there are very few actual chunks of haddock in the fishcakes rather the flakes have mingled in with the rest of the filling. The fishcake as a whole does taste very strongly of smoked haddock and it's obvious to me that the fish used is good quality and it's certainly full of flavour.
The potato is creamy and smooth, it is mixed with a cheese and leek sauce which is extremely tasty and compliments the smoked fish perfectly. The cheese flavour is quite subtle but manages to be rich at the same time and makes the filling creamy and delicious. There are small pieces of leek mixed in with the filling, not quite big enough to taste of leek but well cooked and a nice change in texture from the smooth potato.
I sprinkled my fishcakes with a little salt and vinegar and this bought out the flavours well, I served them with a salad and some fat free homemade sweet potato wedges and this certainly made for an appetising and diet friendly meal. One is definitely enough because although they are not large to look at, the filling is fairly deep and it squashed my appetite down.
My son in law eats these on a sandwich with fresh bread and butter, I cannot think of anything less appetising so shall not be trying this but he insists it's a delicious snack.
They are on constant offer in Tesco at 2 packs for £2, and these fishcakes also come with other kinds of fish (salmon, cod and unsmoked haddock) which you can mix and match as part of the offer. If you're not following the Weight Watchers points plan then a single fishcakes contains 195 calories and 9.9g of fat, of which 1.3g of saturates.
Summary: A lovely fishcake that I will continue buying for when I can't be bothered making my own.

perfectly-p - 03/11/08 My son would also probably eat these in a sandwich, although with a generous portion of tomato ketchup! |
