Something not so Fishy.
TESCO FINEST SMOKED HADDOCK AND SWEET POTATO CHOWDER,.
I bought this soup as it was in the reduced section in Tescos for 53p. I have had chowders before and I always thought Chowders were thick hearty soups and thought it would be nice to have to eat with some crusty bread whilst watching my favourite soaps on TV.
Packaging.
A clear plastic tub with a label around the middle. It has a picture of smoked haddock, chunks of sweet potato and fresh green basil making it look quite attractive. Pity they forgot to put some in the soup!
Contents. 600g
On pouring the soup into a bowl I was rather surprised not to see any pieces of smoked haddock. I could see a few kernels of sweetcorn and some green bits of basil. It was a creamy colour with the consistency of dishwater.
Taste.
It tasted creamy with a bit of garlic and had a slightly fishy taste like there had been fish in it once upon a time.
Smell.
Smelt OK but nothing special. Had a fishy smell to start with but soon wore off.

I thought this soup was not worthy of being in the finest range. It was like dishwater. It was very thin and I had maybe 2 pieces of fish that were probably no bigger than a pea. It fared better for sweetcorn but even that you could have easily fitted on a tablespoon. The Sweet potato was either part of the liquid as there were no pieces in the soup at all. The liquid would have been better if it had a fishier taste. If there had been proper pieces of fish and sweet potato in it would have been fine. I felt decidedly cheated. Needless to say I won’t be buying it again.
Cost 89p. (Full price)
Recommended. Definitely not!
Summary: Not recomended

- 02/07/07 Wow, looking at the ingredients label, they are even bold enough to state the low content. But from the sounds of it that 5% haddock mut be broth! |
