Advantages: Great for a quick dessert, wonderful taste.

Disadvantages: Very high in fat and sugar

On the very seldom occassion, when there is only hubby and myself for dinner, I always like to have a few small individual desserts in the fridge or freezer. The reason for this is, that if I had a full size dessert for just the two of us, I would polish off the leftovers.

Recently I have bought the individual strrawberry trifles from Tesco.

These trifles come in a pack containing three trifles. The trifles are inside a wraparound, cardboard covering. It tell you that it contains three rich, creamy and heavenly strawberry trifles. There is also a picture of the trifle and it looks delicious.

Each trifle comes in a clear plastic tub with a silver foil lid on the top and it contains 150g of trifle. The tub measures about four inches inches in height. As it is clear plastic you can see the contents cleary through the tub.

On the bottom there is a layer of strawberry jelly which has several small strawberries through it. On top of the jelly there is a thin layer of sponge. Next comes the yellow custard and finally the fresh whipped cream. The cream has been piped onto the top of the trifle and almost covers the custard completely.

The way I like to eat my trifle is, to put my spoon right down to the bottom of the tub so that I get a small piece of each layer. The taste is amazing.

For this review I did taste each layer separately. The cream tastes exactly as you would expect fresh whipped cream to taste. The custard is not too thick and it is slightly runny. It tastes lovely and creamy. The thin layer of sponge has a very nice, melt in the mouth taste to it. It does not taste stodgy. The jelly obviously has a lovely strawberry flavour to it. I was also pleasantly surprised to find five small strawberries through the jelly. I did think I would be lucky if I found one or two. Having eaten quite a few of these now, I am happy to say that the strawberry content is usually five or six.

Having eaten these trifles layer by layer, and also eaten them with a small piece of everything on my spoon,my preference is a small piece of everything. All the textures and flavours work very well together and this makes these trifles a very enjoyable treat.

I buy the standard trifles, but I know they are also available in the low fat variety, although I have not tried them.

Each standard trifle contains:-

190 Calories
20.6g of Sugar
7.7g of Fat
2.6g of Protein

These are obviously not suitable if you are on a diet, but they are absolutely delicious if you are not.

The trifles must be stored in the fridge and are not suitable for home freezing.

I like to eat my trifle straight from the tub. There is a picture on the packaging which shows the trifle ready to be served, and it is on a plate. I have tried to remove the trifle from the tub and transfer it to a plate but it has never ended up looking like the one on the packaging. More like a splodgy mess.

Just now Tesco have an offer on, with the trifles. Instead of paying £1.49 for three, the are on a special offer at 74p.

Summary: Eat this and you will think you have gone all the way to heaven and back again.....
