Advantages: A pleasant and quick pudding
Disadvantages: None
Sunday afternoon tea was always the same, thinly sliced bread and butter with homemade jam followed by fruit and tinned cream or on high day and a holiday a homemade trifle.
If by any unearthly chance a small amount of sponge cake had managed to survive in the cake tin then on Saturday it was used up in the trifle base.
A ready made trifle would have been seen as the lazy way out plus totally unacceptable!
How times have changed, now we have hundreds of delicious ready made puddings, mousses, yoghurt's and trifles at our fingertips everyday of the week.
Nothing ever could come close to the homemade version, the left over cake was crumbled into the cut glass trifle bowl and then a Rowntree`s jelly was made using the juice from the can of fruit and boiling water. The glazed tinned peaches were tipped on top of the crumbled sponge and then the liquid jelly was poured over the top and the bowl was cooled and then placed on the marble cold slab in the larder to set.
Twenty four hours later the set fruit jelly was topped with thick creamy Birds custard, a layer of whipped cream was spooned onto the top and then those magical multi-coloured `Hundreds and Thousands` were sprinkled liberally over the top of the magnificent trifle.
That process seems positively antiquated now!
Instead we trot into our local supermarket and pick up one of the many different varieties of trifle available on the market today.
A three pack of Tesco Strawberry Trifle will set you back about £1.90.
The trifle triplets sit inside a light golden coloured cardboard sleeve which has an enticing portion of the lush pudding showing to the right hand side of the sleeve and the product details are elegantly printed in bold white lettering.
Each delight has been potted in a clear plastic container and sealed with a foil lid. In the bottom of each pot there is a small amount of semi-sweet sponge which is surrounded with swimming strawberries and solidified strawberry jelly.
Directly on the top of this they have poured on a thick layer of very yellow creamy custard and then have topped it off with some whipped cream which has been finished off prettily.
One trifle contains 190 calories and take into account that they are high in carbohydrates and sugar.
The jelly base does come over as being sweet but not overly strawberry flavoured although very pleasant. Tesco have ensured that there are ample strawberries and sponge to fill the base of the carton and the custard reminds me of tinned custard, it is extra rich and creamy and not too sweet.
The layer of whipped cream isn't thick but it is enough to make the trifle seem complete and the pudding as a whole is a pleasurable experience.
Anyone who has a big appetite for desserts might consider eating two, the portions are tailored to the smaller appetite.
As a quick fix Tesco Strawberry trifles are a good stand in for the real thing.
I enjoy them but think that at just over 60p a pot they do work out quite expensive.
Summary: A good way out if you are in a hurry!

- 16/02/09 Lovely childhood memories....my trifles never turn out right so if ever I want one, I have to resort to ready-made ones. Never tried Tescos one though - sadly the nearest Tesco to me is about 5 miles away and not easy to get to using public transport. Great review! |

- 16/02/09 My hubby can eat a family sized tesco strawberry trifle in one go. Maybe I should buy the three pack and hide two of them. |
