Review of Tesco Strawberry Trifle Triple Pack
Tesco supermarket are well known for their range of own branded goods, some are excellent, some not so good. This particular product falls into the excellent category!
**The Product**
As the name implies, this is a triple pack of individual strawberry trifles.
The product packaging describes the trifles as "12% Strawberries in a fruit jelly, sponge, custard and whipped cream". The trifles are presented in a clear plastic pot with a clear perspex lid. The whipped cream is clearly visible through this and looks very pretty and tempting with it's rosette pattern!
On opening the lid, there is a faint fruity scent, but other than that there is no discernable aroma.
**Taste and texture**
The trifle texture is soft and light. The spoon slides through the whipped cream and then into the yellowy custard layer. These two layers are very sweet, but apart from the sweetness, fairly bland in taste. The next layer is the sponge, a wafer thin biscuit-like circle of pale golden brown sponge, this is tasty, firm, yet soft to the palate. Below the sponge lies the strawberries in jelly, bright red in colour, it looks a little artificial, but tastes very strongly of strawberry. I can assure you there are real strawberries within the jelly. My assurance is based on the fact that I got a little bit of green stalk attached to a small whole strawberry in one spoonful! The strawberry jelly is smooth and soft, the fruit chunky and firm. All in all, the taste and texture are everything one would expect from a trifle, a glorious mixture of smooth and sweet comfort food delight!
**Ingredients, nutritional content and weight**
The ingredient list is huge and I won't bore readers with a long, boring section on ingredient details.
The main ingredients are as follows:-
Water
Milk
Stabilised whipped cream 13%
Skimmed milk
Dextrose
Strawberries 12%
Sugar
Egg
Fruit concentrates (apple, raspberry, lemon, elderberry)
Gelling agents (Pectin, carob gum)
Colour (Anthocyanins, Beta-carotene)
Each trifle contains 175 calories, 22.3g sugar, 7.8 g fat, 5.0g saturates and 0.4g salt.
The gelling agent being pectin and carob gum mean the trifles are vegetarian friendly. This makes a pleasant change as so many desserts are made using gelatine making the product unsuitable for vegetarians.
Allergy sufferers should be aware that the trifles contain egg, milk, wheat and gluten. The product may contain traces of nuts or nut derivatives.
Total pack weight is 375g, each trifle weighs 125g.
**Packaging**
The product is packaged in a recyclable cardboard sleeve, bearing a picture of the product. The nutritional information is printed both on the top of the cardboard sleeve and again on the side. The trifles themselves are as I have stated, presented in a clear plastic pot, this means that the lovely colourful layers of cream, custard, sponge and fruit in jelly can be seen clearly. Each pot is approximately 3.5 inches high. The pots are actually rather useful once washed, as moulds for homemade desserts or as my daughter, who has young children recommends, save them for use as painting water pots or sand pit play.
**Storage**
The trifles are unsuitable for freezing and should be kept refrigerated and used by the sell by date stamped on the packaging and individual trifle lid.
**Cost**
I paid 99p for the triple pack from Tesco Extra, this was a special offer, the usual price is £1.57.
**Tesco contact information**
Tesco Stores Limited, Cheshunt, EN8 9SL.

**My conclusion**
These little trifles are a great instant dessert for those occasions when something sweet is called for. The trifles are very fruity, creamy and totally delicious!
I felt that the trifles are rather high in calories, fat and sugar to be classed as a healthy dessert, but having compared them with a couple of similar desserts by other manufacturers, the calories etc in Tesco trifles do appear to be slightly lower than other brands.
In conclusion I would recommend these to others.
