Advantages: Delicious taste,,,

Disadvantages: It can become 'squashed' when cut

I have been a fan of Tesco's Tiger bread ever since it was first introduced.

The reasons I was drawn to it are several. The first thing that drew me to the Tiger bread was the mouthwatering smell that wafted tantalisingly underneath my nostrils as they were stacked on the shelves.

I can't quite describe the 'irrestible' smell of it - except to say that it smelled very crusty and that it was mouth wateringly 'distinctive'. No bread had ever smelled like that before!!

Another other reason I bought it was that it was, at that time, very reasonably priced and you could get a 'huge' loaf for about 75p!

It made a change from baguettes and french sticks.....

When I got it home I just had to have a slice.....It was still quite warm. The bread was absolutely delicious.. It was very soft and quite moist. The texture was quite 'springy'. It was also a very substantial bread and was exceedingly filling!

I love it just on its own or with some butter. I also like it with jam...In fact I like it with anything!! It's great for sandwiches too. And for dunking in stews... and mopping up sauces especially peppered steak sauce! Be warned it is very 'moreish'!

I believe that the distinctive smell is due to the combination of sesame oil and rice paste used to 'coat' the surface of the bread before baking. The mottled 'stripy' tiger appearance of the crust occurs as a result of the drying out of the paste during the cooking process.

One drawback is that when it is at it's 'freshest' it can be difficult to cut and does 'squash' a little under the pressure of the bread knife. However, it is good for 'tearing' if not sharing!! The other drawback is that I eat far to much of it and it adds 'inches' to my waistline.....

(However, you can get the bread presliced if you wish...I prefer it unsliced as it is more 'versatile'!)

It's best eaten on the day of purchase but is OK the next day too. After two days it is a little stale...then I use it for toast. However, in my household there is usually no Tiger bread left after the first day!! All the family love it!

I think due to rising food prices and its 'popularity' the price of Tiger bread has increased. At Tesco's it comes in two sizes and costs £1.09 for a 800 gram loaf - which equates to 13.6p per 100g or for a 400 gram loaf. Still, very good value and much tastier than a normal sliced loaf!! If you haven't yet tried it - do so - I am sure you will get 'hooked'...
