Advantages: Very cheap
Disadvantages: Needs a ring pull
In the winter and whenever I'm feeling ill, I like to have some nice hot soup with a thick chunk of bread. It really does make me feel better. My favourite is normally chicken soup. Although I think very highly of Tesco value products I'd never bought a tin of soup from them before, I think it was the packaging that put me off even though it doesn't with other value products. I normally prefer to buy a tin of Heinz because of the really tasty looking picture on the front. However due to the increasing price of Heinz lately I decided to try buying a Tesco value tin.
Tesco Cream of Tomato Soup comes in a 400g tin for just 18p. There is no ring pull on this can unfortunately but apart from that it seems ok. It has a big white label on it with blue and red writing, the usual Tesco Value theme. On the back of the packet is the ingredients, the nutritional information and the cooking instruction.
This soup is made from:
Tomato Puree (49%), Water, Reconstituted Whey Powder, Modified Maize Starch, Sugar, Vegetable Oil, Salt, Onion Powder, Yeast Extract, Acidity Regulator (Citric Acid), Paprika, Flavouring, Mustard Flour.
Be warned though, it contains mustard and milk! If you're allergic to either of these then please avoid this soup.
Recipe: No nuts
Ingredients: Cannot guarantee nut free
Factory: No nuts
One serving (half a tin) contains:
105 Calories (5% GDA)
3.2g of Sugar (7% GDA)
4.8g of Fat (7% GDA)
0.8g of Saturated Fat (4% GDA)
1.6g of Salt (26% GDA)
As you can see it isn't that bad for you, except for the salt content which you have to watch out for as half a tin will give you a quarter of your guideline daily amount of salt.
The soup looks kind of orangey in the can, I prefer it homemade as I can then get it nice and red but this was cheaper than buying the fresh ingredients. It did however smell like tomatoes which is a good sign.
To cook it in the microwave you have to put it in a microwavable bowl and cook it on full temperature for 2 minutes, then remove it, stir it and cook again for 2 minutes at full temperature.
If you want to cook it on the hob then just empty it into a saucepan and let it cook for 3-4 minutes.
The soup had a very thick texture which was nice, I don't like it when soup's are to thin and watery. This was nice though and went really well with some chunky bread. It tasted very much of tomatoes, I'd have been worried if it didn't lol. I think it could have done with some herbs in it but it tasted really nice anyway.
Overall I give it 8 out of ten because I think it needs more herbs and a ring pull.
Summary: Tasty and cheap soup, very nice
