Advantages: Cheap, easy to use, taste great!

Disadvantages: None at all!

It's nearly Christmas and I hope you've all got your trifle sponges ready!

I always get a packet of Tesco Trifle Sponges as I usually make at least one trifle during the Christmas festivities and these gorgeous little things make life easy and taste great!

The sponges come in a pack of eight at a cost of 54p for the pack which makes them just less than 7p each. They come packaged in a cardboard box which protects them and inside the box they are packaged in cellophane in two packs of four. This in itself is a great idea as it means you can use four and the other four will remain fresh until you need them. Each sponge is about 3 inches by 2 inches and about half an inch deep.

The picture on the front of the box shows two individual fruit trifles which look absolutely delicious! The description of the trifle sponges is 'Deliciously moist sponges coated with a sprinkling of sugar make a perfect trifle in minutes'.

As with all the Tesco brand items there is a panel of information on the box which gives the calorie, fat, sugar and salt levels in the sponges expressed as a percentage of the average adult daily allowance.

On the back of the box there is more detailed nutritional information together with the ingredients and a couple of recipe suggestions for your trifles.

I don't tend to make special recipe trifles though so these are my ideas for the perfect trifle.

To make what I would consider to be a traditional trifle:

1. Place a layer of sponges in the bottom of your dish
2. Pour some sherry onto the sponges so that it is absorbed
3. Add a layer of tinned fruit salad
4. Pour on a pint of jelly and allow it to set completely
5. Pour on a pint of custard or blancmange and allow it to set completely
6. Decorate the top with whipped cream and sugar strands

Since I am a Diabetic I make my trifles in a slightly different way so that I can reduce the sugar content to a more reasonable level.

I still put the trifle sponges in the bowl and add some sherry (well it is Christmas!). I then use a small tin of fruit salad in fruit juice not the one in sugary syrup. The next layer is a pint of sugar free jelly followed by half a pint of no added sugar Angel Delight. If we decide that we want cream as well I just put some Elmlea Light in a jug to be poured on the trifle once it has been served in individual dishes.

The sponges end up lovely and moist with sherry, fruit juice from the fruit salad and the jelly. The taste is heavenly whether in the traditional trifle or the lower sugar version. I have made my own sponges in the past but these are just as good if not better and for 54p for a pack of eight you can't really go wrong can you?

You can of course make up your own ideas by just using the sponges with fruit and jelly or spreading jam on the sponges and then topping them with custard etc., just use your imagination!

The nutritional value per sponge is as follows:
Calories 70
Protein 1.7g
Carbohydrate 14.1g
Of which sugars 8.2g
Fat 0.8g
Of which saturates 0.2g
Fibre 0.2g
Salt trace

They are also suitable for vegetarians and are made in a factory where there are no nuts.

Go on - buy a pack or two - they're great for a quick, delicious sweet!

Summary: Make a great, quick dessert!
