Advantages: Taste good, Cheap
Disadvantages: Not to everyone's taste
Baked Beans….they are an every day essential item; everyone has them in their kitchen cupboard and they do come in rather useful for quick fix meals and snacks. Baked beans are used in any number of recipes such as Curry and Corned Beef Hash and you can even buy tins of beans for baby food made by Heinz.
You can get different flavour of baked beans, anything from Curry to BBQ flavour.
As most of you fellow Dooyoo-ers will know I am the main grocery shopper in my family as I do the shop every week and am always on the look out for a bargain. I like baked beans, however I loathe Heinz Baked Beans as they are too expensive and don't taste very nice to (me anyway), so I usually stock up on the cheaper varieties and Tesco have once again proved that less money doesn't necessarily mean less quality.
##The Tin##
I won't bore you with too much detail here but the tin isn't a ring pull variety and does require you to use a can opener. The label is a red and white affair with a picture of a fork with baked beans on it and the words Tesco Value to one side and baked beans emblazoned on the front. Okay so I know that this tin isn't the most desirable looking one on the shelves, but do you really care about that or are you more interested in what is contained in the tin?
Towards the back we have the usual information of which I'll get to later.
##The Taste##
The taste is sweet and rich but not over powering and there is no after taste, which I find with some brands.
##Availability##
As this is a Tesco own brand, it is only available from Tesco stores or online at Tesco.co.uk. I'm sure other supermarkets do their own brand too which you could try.
##The Price##
This is the important bit:
For my humble tin of Value Baked Beans I paid a small sum of 14 pence.
The other own brand baked beans that Tesco produce and sell costs 24 pence.
Not bad when you take into consideration that Heinz baked beans cost 44 pence a tin and HP baked beans cost 38 pence a tin.
##Other Information##
Now for the exciting part of my review…I knew that you were all waiting for it so here goes.
~~Cooking Instructions~~
You can cook these on the hob in 4 minutes or place in the microwave for anything from 2 minutes up to 4 minutes depending on the wattage of your appliance.
Please remember to take the beans out of the tin first!!
~~Packaging Information~~
The tin is made out of recyclable steel and holds 420g of beans and is produced in Italy.
~~Storage~~
Tesco advise that the tin should be kept in a cool dry place.
Once opened they advise that the food is transferred to a non-metallic container and consumed within 2 days
The best before date is located at the end of the can…so I had a look and it was actually at the top, but the shelf life is March 2007, so fairly average life span.
~~Nutrition~~
I won't bore you with the full list but just give you the jist of what a serving provides.
Energy - 143kcal
Carbohydrate - 21.8 grams
Protein - 10.9 grams
Fat - 1.3 grams
Fibre - 7.8 grams
Sodium - 1.1 grams
The can provides two servings.
##My Opinion##
Personally I don't eat as much baked beans as I probably ought to but these, even though they are an inexpensive brand, taste pleasant and you get enough in a tin to satisfy your hunger.
Summary: Inexpensive product that tastes nice
