Advantages: They are cheap
Disadvantages: Thinner sauce
I am not a huge fan of Baked Beans I have to be in the right mood for them, but my husband really likes them and I found that I was paying around 28p for a small tin of Heinz Baked Beans for him, then I noticed the Tesco Value Baked Beans at 15p for a 420g can even if I had to throw half of them out it was still cheaper than buying the small can, but did they taste as good I wonder, we shall find out later in the review.
Well you can recognise this product on the shelves with its basic packaging which is a white label with the Tesco Value blue and white logo on the top and the words Baked Beans written in red and the words in tomato sauce written in smaller blue letters. You will also see a picture of a forkful of the product.
The tin also gives you other information such as ingredients which are:
Beans 45%
Water
Tomato Puree 18%
Sugar
Modified Maize Starch
Salt
Paprika
Onion Powder
Onion Extract
Spice Extracts
Nice to see no E numbers there.
In each 420g can there are two servings so each 210g serving contains:
164 calories
9.5g protein
34.9g carbohydrate
0.6g fat
7.4g fibre
1.1g sodium
So that’s all the boring stuff over with “What do they taste like”? I hear you ask.
Well first of all I have to tell you that you will need a tin opener to open the can as it does not have a ring pull.
I have to admit there is a lot more sauce in these than in Heinz Beans and it is not as thick as the Heinz variety, but what do we expect for the price. We tend to drain off a lot of the sauce.
It only takes about 2-3 minutes to heat them up on the hob and I have tasted them and to be honest I actually find them very tasty and so does my husband, there is a nice tomato sauce flavour which is not too tangy. The fact that my husband said he enjoyed them really pleased me as I am now saving myself some money on these I tend to pick up a few tins each time I am in Tesco as they come in handy for a lunch or supper too.
I like adding some Worcester Sauce to them whilst they are still in the pot it adds that extra flavour to them, the same with normal brown sauce if you haven’t tried it then give it a go it is a pleasant change.
Now you should store these unopened in a cool dry place but once you open you should store them in a non metallic container in the fridge and use within a couple of days.
These are also suitable for Vegetarians.
One last piece of information is that the tin is fully recycleable.
Summary: A tin of beans for people on a budget

- 17/02/06 I think all beans pretty much taste the same, so I don't buy Heinz! Good review. Susie |
