Like many people I am trying to find ways to save money at the moment. In our local Tesco they have recently dedicated a whole aisle to Tesco value range. I have never actually bought anything from the Tesco range before but decided to have a closer look at what was on offer. I usually buy either Heinz or Branson's baked beans' depending which is on offer, and can't tell the difference between them. I was surprised to see that the Tesco value beans only cost 20p for a 429-gram tin compared to 53p for a slightly smaller tin of Heinz baked beans. So I took the plunge and decided to give this humble looking tin of beans a chance!
Tesco value baked beans certainly wouldn't win any prizes for its packaging. The beans come in a very plain tin with a blue and white label. No appetising picture or gold writing to temp you with this product!
I like to read labels and always check the sugar and salt content of any food I buy. On getting the beans home I decided to compare the Tesco beans with a tin of Branston's I had in my cupboard. The Tesco value beans contain 40% haricot beans compared to 52% in the Branston's can. The biggest surprise was that the Tesco beans have 3.8 grams of sugar per 100 grams compared to 5.9 grams of sugar in the Branston's beans! The Tesco beans have less salt too with 0.2 grams per 100 grams compared to 0.3 grams in the Branson's beans. If you are watching your weight then the Tesco beans win again with only 60 calories per 100 grams compared to 87 calories for Branston's.
The taste test.
***********
On opening the can of Tesco beans I was immediately struck by how much thinner the sauce looked than the branded varieties. The can contained a good amount of plump beans however. I did find the beans tasted a bit bland but that may be because I'm used to eating beans with more sugar and salt! My children on the other hand didn't notice any difference.
I think like many, I have been brainwashed by the huge advertising campaigns undertaken by the big brands, you know beans meanz Heinz! The Tesco value beans look like they are second best but they are actually better for you in terms of their sugar and salt content.
I will definitely be buying these again and at only 20p a can I think they are a real bargain!
Summary: Value baked beans
