Advantages: well, they're cheap as chips...
Disadvantages: but these go to show that you CAN sometimes put a price on quality!!
Well, seeing as there have been several reviews of late on this product and seeing as how I have recently begun trying to shop on a budget, I thought I would buy a tin in place of my usual HEINZ or BRANSTON beans and see for myself how they measured up. If nothing else, at 22p a pop simply writing a review would pay for the error (or not as the cae may be) of my ways as one recent reviewer pointed out plus I might actually save a few extra pennies in the future. And who could argue with that?
First impressions as I open the extremely bland-looking tin (which looks like one of those products with white labels often used in low-budget produced movies) is there seems to be a lot of liquid. Now sometimes you get that, fair enough, and the beans have merely sank to the bottom but even pouring these in a bowl for heating seems to suggest that there is more sauce in the tin than beans. Also the beans are lacking a little in colour (which might be a good thing as we all know much of the colouration in these products comes from highly dubious, artifical origins) and look a tad weak. While I'm waiting, I cook 2 slices of TESCO VALUE BREAD for toast (it's bread-you can't really go wrong!!).
Pouring the beans over my toast confirms my worst fears; there is a hell of a lot of liquid that far outnumbers the amount of beans you get in proportion. Still not a problem- theres still the taste test. I take a big mouthful and..... hmmmmmm
Now here is where I should really leave the review and simply say buy some yourself and make your own mind up but, seeing as how that probably wouldn't generate me much in the form of ratings, I'll spill the beans on what I think...)I was waiting to use that pun, should probably have kept on waiting huh?(
Well, they're okay. I know thats not very conclusive but thats the only way I can think of describing them. They're not as tasty as HEINZ or BRANSTON but then they are a fraction of the cost. They're not horrible to the palate but neither are they mind-blowing, shout it to the roof-tops brilliant either. They're fairly weak in consistency and, even with an extra helping of tomato ketchup added for flavour, don't really taste of much of anything!! Neither do they fill me up like regular beans do though they have similar effects down below in the realm of the trousers.
Would I buy them again? Probably not, I am quite fussy when it comes to my beans and have found only BRANSTONS to be a worthy competitor to the tradditional HEINZ variety. As TESCO VALUE products go, most of them are okay and as much as you expect and this product is no different. So far only TESCO VALUE GINGER NUTS from the VALUE range have gone the extra mile for me and if its a case of buying these baked beans or my normal brand then I think we all know whats going to win out!! Frack the extra pennies, theres no budgeting on beans!!
Summary: Proving that not all the TESCO VALUE range is as good a deal as it seems
