Advantages: cheap
Disadvantages: inedible
With the credit crunch hitting most families including ours I decided it was time to make changes to the weekly shopping.
My husband loves baked beans and I figured I could save a few pence by going from Tesco baked beans which he managed to become accustomed to (with some gentle persuasion), to tesco value baked beans.
I have been pleasantly surprised by some of their value products ( and not so pleasantly with others), and a little saving here and there soon adds up.
The Nutritional difference to Tesco Value and Tesco normal baked beans :-
Tesco Value per 100 g
Energy 49kcal
Protein 4.2g
Carbohydrate 7.4g
Sugars 4.1g
Fat 0.3g
Saturate fats 0.1g
Fibre 4.4
Sodium 0.2g
salt equivalent 0.6g
Tesco Normal Baked Beans per 100g
Energy 65kcal
Protein 4.7g
Carbohydrate 10.3g
Sugars 5.6g
Fat 0.5g
Saturate Fats 0.1g
Fibre 3.5
Sodium 0.4g
Salt equivalent 0.9g
There is not a great deal of difference but if you take these figures at face value the tesco normal beans are less healthy as they are higher on all apart from equal values of saturate fats and less fibre - though this could be a significantly good thing especially where my husband is concerned!!!
The price
Tesco value baked beans - £0.18 for 420g
Tesco Baked Beans in tomatoe sauce - £0.31 for 420g
So the value baked beans are significantly cheaper when you consider my husband will manage to get through several tins per week!
Packaging
As with all tesco value products this tin comes with the white background and tesco value written in red - always has blue and red writing with their value products.
I do remember having these a year or so ago at my mother in laws, my memory may have been playing tricks on me but my recollection was that the sauce was reasonably thick and not a bad value product.
I opened the tin and was not impressed to see the beans submerged in a faintly red tinted watery sauce. They did not look in the slightest bit appetising but things can often taste better than you first think so I poured them into a saucepan and gently warmed them through.
I toasted some bread, buttered it and then when the beans had been warmed through after a few minutes, I poured them onto the toast to check out.
There is only one word to describe the taste of these beans - yuck! - watery, flavourless, mushy!!!!
If these beans are to be made in the slightest bit tolerable ( in my opinion) you would need to add some tomatoe ketchup to them or something equivalent which rather negates the whole idea!
I will not be subjecting my husband to this particular value brand but I will not let it put me off in my quest for reducing the weekly budget!
Summary: Value but not in a nice way
