Advantages: Cheap and tasty

Disadvantages: Not a lot!

What can you say about an own brand label of baked beans?

Well, Tesco Value Baked Beans are just what it says on the tin. They're baked beans and they are incredibly good value for money. I've tried all sorts and varieties of baked beans in my time. The "Beanz Meanz Heinz" variety, Batchelors, and almost every multifarious variety and flavour you could possibly imagine including most of the own brand variety from the supermarket.

Granted some are a wee bit tastier than others, but at the end of the day a tin of baked beans is a tin of baked beans whatever label you put on the tin. If truth be known, it's entirely possible that the old urban legend that some of the "own brand" products are actually the very same product as some of the more expensive branded varieties probably has some truth to it!

Tesco Value Baked Beans (in tomato sauce) can be eaten in a variety of fashions. Baked beans on toast with a bit of mature cheddar cheese on top is my own particular, but you can have them whatever way takes your own particular palate. Lots of folks like them with chips or a fry up, and they are part of the vast majority of ordinary folks regular diet.

What's so good about Tesco Value Baked Beans, or ones from the likes of Lidl, Aldi, Dunnes Stores, or any other supermarket chain come to that, is that they are a whole lot cheaper than the branded versions like Heinz or Batchelors, don't taste that much different, and because of the cheaper price you can buy far more of them for less money.

On today's Tesco Ireland website (17/3/09) you can purchase a 4 tin pack of Value Baked Beans in tomato sauce, with a massive 420g in each tin, for a mere Euro1.65. Heinz beans are Euro0.75 for only a single 200g can, and Batchelor's beans are Euro0.69 for a 225g can.

That says it all for me. No contest! Give me the own brand version every time.

I have to say though - you can't beat Heinz baked beans!

Tesco? VALUE? No way that I'm going to try any of their value range. If I'm going to look for something cheap and look nice I would definitely go for Aldi's or lidl's, same price as the value but looks and taste much better with less sauce!
