Advantages: Cheap, fills you up
Disadvantages: Hard, bland, runny sauce
Tesco Value Beans
After sampling some other Tesco value products, I thought I'd give the forerunner to the value range a try. In my local tesco, theyare 29p a tin, which is not the cheapest value bean, but is far cheaper than many of the branded items. The tin has the usual value blue stripes and no picture, but its whats inside that matters.
The beans, when poured into a bowl, looked pretty much like ordinary beans apart from the sauce. Rather than an opaque almost creamy looking tomato sauce that covers the beans and looks quite tomatoey, the value bean sauce looked a bit watery and runny. The sauce is quite transparent and there is almost a watery film on top of the sauce. The sauce being thin, does not give as good a bean coverage as some of the more expensive brands do, leaving the beans a bit bare.
Upon cooking the beans, I noticed that they were slightly off colour and more beige than orange. I was hoping that the sauce would thicken up under heat, but it still remained runny although the water did evaporate.
Eating the beans was the real test and this is where I found they failed the most. The sauce didnot taste of much and had no salty sweet tomato flavour, just a slight briney, watery wash of a taste. The beans themselves were bland and a bit hard, not the creamy lentil like texture I was expecting. I had not undercooked the beans and even when I re-tried them and tasted them cold, cooked and double cooked, they still remained hard and not very palateble. There were also lots of empty bean shells floating around in the sauce.
Of all the Tesco Value products, the beans have been a disapointment and I would not like to eat them again!
Summary: Not a good Value product. Too cheap

- 31/05/09 I must admit they're good but if the price continues to rise then they won't be worth buying as Tesco own-brand beans (not the Value ones) are much better in relation to the price. |
