Advantages: Economical and the beans themselves are not too bad
Disadvantages: Bland, a bit soggy and flavourless
One of my favourite foods is toast and weekly I like to find things to top it with. I love baked and a blob of brown sauce over it so when I saw these priced at 29p a can I thought I'd give them a go for my tea tonight!
The Packaging:
Red and white can with a photograph of the beans on the front and in red, white and navy writing I'm told it is Tesco Baked Beans In Tomato Sauce, that they have the same great taste but now with 50% less salt and that they are good source of fibre, there is a nutritional at a glance chart on there and the size is stated which is 420g. Round the back of the can other information includes, how to heat them, ingredients and allergy advice is listed as is a full nutritional chart and contact details for Tesco. This is an economy looking can but it is informative enough.
Me And The Beans:
Well to open the can up you do need a can opener as no ring-pull is provided. So I opened the can to be greeted with mainly what appeared to be a brightly coloured orange and thin looking sauce. At this point no beans were visible at all! Then simply all I did to cook these was bung them in the microwave in a microwavable dish for 3 minutes as recommended on the can stirring once or you can cook them on the hob in a saucepan for about 4 minutes, the choice is yours and my way, I found them to be well cooked and piping hot throughout in the time given.
Now the beans tasted ok to be fair to them. Typical haricot beans they were being pale and small and through cooking they had softened a little and held rather well. Taste wise well they tasted more of the bean and the soggy and moistness was more interesting than that of the sauce. Vaguely reminiscent of tomato sauce this was. Ok it was well seasoned with a hint of tomato sauce to it but really not very much at all. The sauce had no body, no thickness...and it simply it was rather bland. Add to that some of the haricot bean skins were floating in it that were quite sharp and chewy and didn't exactly look inviting.
Verdict:
A very cheap economy buy these are and they're not awful to be fair to them. Least the beans feel cooked and are not like mini rotten bullets and at least the sauce tries to be that of tomato though doesn't quite succeed. However these are not for me. The beans were ok, the beans skins were not. Salt and sugar levels fine but ruined by far too much thin sauce and not enough beans. I wouldn't avoid eating these for sure but I will next time I'm in Tescos be looking to pay more in future for a better can!
