Advantages: Lots Of Bean And Sauce

Disadvantages: Few Sausages, Sauce Lacks Taste

Aah the summers are here, nice weather, sleep-ins and more often than not in our house no food other than ice creams. This has the overall of effect of reducing man to the basics i.e. toasties and beans on toast, the last of which leads to my review today on Tesco Value Baked Beans and Sausages.

Appearance
Well first off the tin has a very simple design, which consists of a white paper label and with the name and nutritional values written in dark blue and a red ring around the bottom. The first thing you notice however is the lack of a ring pull, which really annoys me as I have no idea where I left the can opener I brought back from Uni and am now reduced to using the one that’s been sitting in the cupboard for the last 20 years. Once open you are greeted by a sea of tomato sauce, for the price they really do give you a lot of sauce, also present is a decent two person sized portion of beans. The main problem however is the lack of sausages, it’s different in every pack but I reckon on average I get about 10 small ones, which for a pack this size is quite a let down. The nutritional info on the back is as follows;

Per 100g
Calories – 105 kcal
Protein - 5.7g
Carbohydrate – 11.8g
Fat – 3.7g
Saturates – 1.4g

Smell & Taste
There is little smell when the can is first opened, however that changes once the cooking begins, which for me is always done on the hob as the microwave has a great tendency to make them soggy. The smell is a simple tomato one, not all that different from the smell of Heinz’s own product. Once ready the beans and sausage are poured over my toast and brunch begins. The beans themselves are quite nice given that they are a value product they have a nice balance of softness and firmest meaning most people will at least fine them manageable. The sausages are also pretty standard affair, they tend to come out soft, which usually leads to them getting broke as your stirring which isn’t that big a deal as they are actually pretty nice although a bit saltier than I would have liked. The only major downfall is the sauce, at first all appears fine, there’s lots of it it’s thick and it’s got quite a dark orange colour that’s looks full of flavor. Sadly the last assumption was an error on my part, other than the faintest taste of tomatoes there is now taste to it. Once again Tesco seem to have tried to please everyone and failed completely. The sauce is by no means bad it’s just that it doesn’t have a whole lot going for it either.

Value
A 567g tin costs 0.38p, however the tin makes two decent sized portions so it’s only 0.19p per portion. Overall it’s not bad, it’s just that it’s pretty standard affair however this really should have been guessed from the label. If I was short of money I would buy them without hesitation, but when the money was present I would defiantly go with a bigger name brand. So all in all you’ve got a product that gets the job done but lacks any nice surprises.
Hope this helps.

Summary: Ok if your short of money, otherwise go for the more expensive stuff

One of my friends at university used to live on these, straight out of the can. I prefer my beans warm! Good review
