Advantages: Good taste, nice sausages, very cheap, recyclable can.
Disadvantages: No ring pull, beans aren't Heinz (but then they don't cost Heinz money).
I recently purchased these when looking for some bargain lunch items from my local Tesco store.
The can is aluminium and has a paper label with the familiar Tesco value logo as well as the heating instruction & nutritional information. There is no ring pull on the can but it's very easy to open with a can opener and this helps to keep the product nice and cheap so I don't mind at all.
Once the can is opened I can see beans in tomato sauce with a few mini sausages poking out and it looks quite well proportioned as I throw the contents in to a saucepan and put them on the hob for a few minutes. I warm them through for about 5 minutes (without boiling them) whilst I am waiting for my toast to cook in the toaster.
Once my toast is ready and buttered I spread the beans & sausages over the toast along with all of the tomato sauce and a sprinkling of grated cheese (yum!). The sausages are lovely and meaty without being over the top. They are basically like mini frankfurters and the beans taste fine. The beans & the sauce aren't as nice as Heinz but as I am eating these with toast and the mini sausages it all goes quite well together. The sauce has thickened a little once cooked and there are no hard beans in the can, all of the sausages are cooked well and I can't find anything to fault about this product.
A 567g can is just 36p so this is an absolute bargain. Once coupled with three bits of toast and a little cheese it's cost around 50p for me to have a lovely filling lunch. There are easily enough beans & sausages in the can to serve on four bits of toast and this will easily feed two people at lunchtime. There are 85 calories and 4.9g of sugar per 100g so half a can really is more than ample as part of my lunchtime snack but because I'm a pig I ate the whole can! The can is recyclable so just rinse it and put it out with your other bottles & cans.
I think this is just a fantastic product which is excellent value for money. I will be buying this again & would definitely recommend it. I am therefore rating this product 4/5, I have knocked off one star because the beans could have tasted a little better as well as the sauce being a little thicker.
Summary: A fantastic economnical meal in a can (well, once you've added some toast!).

- 29/04/09 I get a small square of puff pastry (the ready made stuff coz I'm lazy!) put a couple of spoonfuls of beans and sausages on one side, then grate cheese over the top, and fold it up and bake to make a sausage and bean melt. Gorgeous! |
