Advantages: Taste good, fortified with great vits and mins and so CHEAP!
Disadvantages: None.
I'm really loving these flakes. I am a breakfast person through and through. I wake up early and I celebrate with a lovely breakfast on my own. Therefore, breakfast needs to be a meal I really enjoy.
I am also engaged in an ongoing food discussion with my daughter (health, body image, additives, etc) so it was with some interest I saw that she arrived home one day with a giant pack of these. She had scrutinised the packet and decided that it was relatively a low calorie food and having read in a mag that bran filled you up for longer - she bought the Bran Flakes. I scrutinised the packet and found that the ingredients were highly acceptable.
Ingredients
--------------
Wholewheat (75%), Wheat Bran, Sugar, Barley Malt Extract, Salt, Niacin, Iron, Pantothenic Acid, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12
The packet also stated that were 160 calories, 2.7g of fat and 0.6g of salt per serving.
I am very pleased with the fortified vitamins and minerals. I think that the combination of B6, folic acid and B12 is particularly good for maintaining general and heart health. Everyone should be ensuring they have a decent supply of these!
Packaging
------------
A huge and basic blue cardboard with a plastic inner bag containing the flakes. The box is easily recyclable. I like that.
Eating the Bran Flakes
----------------------------
I think the appearance of the flakes are really good. They are large and dark coloured with a faint cereal-like aroma. I can happily eat them out of the packet if I am hungry in the kitchen and looking to graze.
When put in a bowl and milk (in my case soya milk) is applied they remain relatively firm. I have known cereals which surrender to sogginess the milisecond a slosh of milk touches the bowl but I thought these flakes held up well. I sprinkle a bit of my xylitol sweetener on them and consume with enthusiasm. They remain delicious right through the bowlful. I do not grimace as I approach the dregs like I have done with some cereals.
As I write this, my bowl sits near me - empty of bran flakes - not one there. This is a testament that this is a cereal I do indeed enjoy.
I have eaten the branded Bran Flakes before and I can honestly say that I do not prefer the taste and texture above the Value Bran Flakes. I also prefer the price of the Value Bran Flakes!
Price
------
I think these Bran Flakes are extremely good value as they are an excellent product and they cost a mere 76p for a humongous box. This works out at 10p per 100g. The Tesco healthy Living Bran Flakes cost £1.59 for a 1kg box - and these work out at 16p per 100g. I think the Value box compares very favourably.
Summary: I can't see why anyone would pay more for branded bran flakes when these are so cheap AND so good.

- 22/08/09 Great review. I also love my cereals. I must admit I go for the branded ones when they are on offer. Not necessarily loyal to any particular, but I am open to new suggestions. Thanks. I'll try them out :) |

- 17/08/09 I don't like soggy cereal either, there's nothing worse.
Good fun keeping daughters eating healthily as they get older, isn't it? X |
