Advantages: Yummy, versatile, cheap.
Disadvantages: None.
I'm sitting here looking at a value pizza, trying desperately not to go cook it... :)
There are value pizza options in the tesco value range, all cheese and tomato. There's a frozen pizza (268g and 71p), a large fresh pizza (480g and 99p) and an individual size (165g and 46p). I find the mini pizzas are just enough for one person, the frozen pizzas aren't quite enough for two people unless there are other things on the plate, and the large fresh pizza will feed two people or three with a side dish. My personal favourite is the mini pizza, it reminds me of birthday parties when I was a kid.
*PACKAGING*
The packaging above is for the frozen version, the pizza is wrapped in plastic and placed in the box for protection. The fresh value pizzas are wrapped only in plastic. For the fresh, all the information is printed on a label which is placed haphazardly on the top of the pizza (in the wrapping of course!). My only bugbear, and its' a small one, is that the plastic wrap often misshapes the fresh pizza because there is no card base. Not a big deal for the price but still a valid observation.
*BASE*
The pizza base is an average white flour base, nothing particularly special. There are small indentations on the underside which, in my experience, greatly reduce cooking time. When cooked the base is slightly crisp on the underside, but still soft in the middle - I don't mean fluffy soft, but kind of squidgy soft, just how I like it.
*SAUCE*
The tomato sauce is spread across the pizza, with a small gap at the edge. It looks quite thin, you expect to be disappointed, but you're not! It is higher quality that you'd expect, obviously it is mostly tomato purée, but the amount of herbs provide a very good level of flavour. There is enough sauce to be tasty but not so much that the cheese slides off.
*CHEESE*
The cheese appears a little stingy on the top of the pizzas, especially when compared with some of the branded ones, but fear not, when cooking it melts and there is enough to cover the entire pizza in a bubbly expanse of cheese. It is a well balanced blend of mozzarella and cheddar, very tasty. Don't add more cheese until you've tried it at least once, there really is enough!
*OTHER*
100g of pizza has an average (across all three) of 250 calories and around 7 grams of fat. The individual pizzas have 444 calories and 11.9g fat-when teamed with salad this makes a meal under 500 calories, so not too sinful even if you're dieting.
The best part about these pizzas is you can add your own toppings (and they won't be unevenly spread like most frozen pizzas), what ever you want and as much as you want, and it won't be too costly.
