Advantages: Gread spread
Disadvantages: Goes too hard to spread if it's been in the fridge
If you asked me what to do with 600g of chocolate, I wouldn't normally say put it on toast, but in this case, I'll make an exception. Chocolate Spread has always been something I have steered clear of. I have a nut allergy, and so, with a lot of chocolate spreads having nuts put in with them, I never used to be sure what did and didn't have nuts in. These days, pretty much everything is labelled as to whether it has nuts in it or not, and last week, I had the bonus of doing the weekly shop of my own, without the level head of my wife telling me to stop buying that junk!
As a result, I picked this up off the shelf. Sure, there were many other chocolate spreads on offer, but I thought at least I could rest assured I had gone for the cheaper option and not wasted a lot of money. A quick comparison in price told me that this 600g jar of choc spread at around 90p was about half the price of some other brand prices, and with more in the jar as well!
But the real test for me was going to be in the eating of it. With items such as this, I don't really worry about the calorific content, etc. I think that if you're going to have chocolate and spread it on something, then worrying about calories is kind of shutting the gate after the horse has bolted!
So, the first spread. When I got home, in went two slices of bread into the toaster, and I perforated the film on top of the jar. The smell was heavenly, just pure chocolate. A quick check on the jar tells me that, yep, that sugar, oil and cocoa powder, your staple choc ingredients, are first on the list. This stuff is choc indeed!
I passed on the butter option, thinking this would only complicate matters, making it messy and was probably unnecessary. On went the chocolate spread, and I was surprised at how easy it was to spread. The taste of it was lovely, too, and to be honest, I thought it tasted as nice as other choc spreads that I have tried. Despite the nut allergy, this isn't the first time I have tried choc spread, and I'm sure it won't be the last.
You do get a very chocolatey taste, which is just as well, and it doesn't taste like it's a Tesco Value product. With a lot of the other products in the range, you can tell the difference between them and other more expensive or supposedly higher quality products. However, if I had the blindfold test here, I'm pretty sure I would still rate the Value Choc Spread really highly.
The biggest thing for me is that this tastes really great. The only criticism OI have is that, if you put it in the fridge, it does harden and makes it very hard to spread onto the toast or bread. To this end, I kept the spread out of the fridge. It does, after all, say to keep in a cool, dry place. Just perhaps not as cool as the fridge!
So, a thumbs up for this Value product. It has served me well, although I don't think I'll be buying it on a regular basis because it's just too addictive, and I don't particularly want it to be the main part of my diet!
Summary: A very good Tesco Value Product

- 29/03/09 I fell for the mistake of putting it
in the fridge too - not to be
recommended! Came out rock hard.
But I too felt it was a nice taste.
