Advantages: Tasty, very cheap compared to the leading brands
Disadvantages: It just generally tastes cheap, although not awfully so
While I'm not really a fan, my granddaughters' all love chocolate spread on toast (and muffins, and bagels, and bread, and even off a spoon if I'm not being vigilant!). When my daughter came round today she brought a large 600g jar of Tesco Value Chocolate Spread, she knows I like trying the Value range and being such a brand snob she hadn't realised that this product has actually been available for some time and I have used it before.
The chocolate spread has a very similar consistency to the Nutella I usually buy; it's thick enough to be easily able to spread it with a knife, yet not so thick that it will put holes into fresh bread as Nutella sometimes does if it has been left in the cupboard for a while unused.
I personally didn't think it had such a glossy look as Nutella although this doesn't really matter to me, it might put you off though as it does make the spread look a little cheaper - as if the Value packaging hasn't already made you twig, that is!
The taste is good, I like the fact that this is a plain chocolate spread as most seem to always have hazelnuts added to them these days. I'm struggling to think of what to say about the spread if I'm honest as it simply tastes of chocolate spread, there are no underlying flavours to speak of although I must add here that the spread tastes like the cheaper chocolate you can buy.
Imagine the difference between a bar of Lindt chocolate and a bar of Tesco Value chocolate - while the Value chocolate is nice enough for the price, it tastes much less luxurious that the Lindt that should now be fixed in your minds eye. This is the difference between Nutella and this Value Chocolate Spread. You can tell this is the cheaper version by taste alone, although it is still very tasty and moreish - if the amount my ten year old granddaughter had on her crackers last night is anything to go by!
This 600g jar costs just 86p, and this compares very favourably to Nutella which is currently on sale at £1.68 for a jar containing just 400g. Tesco Value have also introduced a Chocolate and Hazelnut Spread which I haven't tried, although I should imagine it would be very much like Nutella in taste even if it's not of the best quality in the world.
Summary: A good value chocolate spread from the Tesco Value range.

- 21/07/09 This will probably sound really snobby ....but I've bought any value foods from any stores as yet , might just give this one a good thought .
If you melt the chocolate spread in a microwave its wonderful tipped on ice-cream or a home made hot chocolate sponge pudding . Great review. |
