Advantages: Very good value, nice quality honey, good flavour and excellent for cooking

Disadvantages: It cannot completely replace my fresh local honey

I cook quite a lot and use a lot of honey when I am making marinades, sauces and cakes. I have noticed a recent increase in the price of honey so while I will continue buying my usual thick local honey from the farmers market for having on toast or cereal, I have started to buy supermarkets own honey for cooking. I have been using the Sainsbury's Basic jars but recently I was in Tesco and needed honey that day so I bought a jar of Tesco Value Clear Honey.

It is very much identical to Sainsbury's cheap honey and is perfect for the purpose of my recipes. It has a nice rounded honey flavour and spoons very well from the jar, I find heating the spoon a little bit before dipping it into the jar will make the honey slide off much easier and therefore it is nice and easy to measure if you need an exact quantity.

The honey is sweet and full of flavour. I have successfully used Value honey in a syrup sponge pudding, honey and lemon chicken, as a glaze for king prawn skewers and numerous other things that I cannot quite think of now. It has a nice balanced taste that marries well with all of the recipes I have come across that calls for clear honey.

It has quite a thin consistency and this means that it is not a good idea to use it on bread and butter because I think it would soak through the bread too much. I will use my farmers market honey for when I want a real treat, but this honey is actually very good drizzled into yogurt because it is thin enough to stir through the yogurt nicely.

The ingredients list simply reads 'Honey' and it is sourced from a blend of EC and Non-EC countries, which is to be expected from such a cheap jar of honey. It only costs about 60p for a 340g jar and I think it is an absolute bargain. The next cheapest jar of honey in Tesco is about £1.30 and they go up to over £5 which is much too expensive for me as I can get through 2 jars in one week sometimes, this Value honey will save me a lot of money in the long run.

Summary: For this price you cannot go wrong, even if you only buy it for cooking.
