Advantages: Low price, pure honey

Disadvantages: Because it is thin honey you have to be careful how you eat it! Can get messy.

I bought Tesco Value Clear Honey because I wanted to try out a sweet recipe for cous cous which includes almonds and honey.

Prior to this I had been paying more than £2 for a jar in our local health food shop. I read somewhere that eating local honey can help to stave off hay fever because it builds up a resistance to allergic reaction to pollen.

Anyway, I didn't want to spend that much on my experimental cous cous dish. This honey cost me 61p for a 454g jar.

The packaging itself is very plain. It comes in a jar with a screw top and a plain white lid, plus a Tesco Value label.

There is a seal which runs from the label up over the jar. This enables you to see if it has been opened. I thought this was a good idea as I have often see children (and adults) opening things in supermarkets to examine the contents, or even worse, to taste the contents.

This honey is blended and made from a mixture of honeys from all over the world. The actual wording on the label is: 'Blend of EC and non EC honeys'. I guess that covers anywhere. It is 100% pure honey though.

100g honey gives you 320 calories but a teaspoonful which is enough to spread on hot buttered toast contains just 16 calories. There is no fat in honey and just a trace of salt.

This not what I would call a strong tasting honey. Some, which are made from one flower, such as acacia, or clover, can be quite aromatic and have a distinctive taste. I found this pleasant and perfect for my cous cous dish which worked well, but I do prefer the local honey I've been buying, even though it is expensive.

Many people say they don't like honey but they have often only tasted one kind. Blended honey and pure honey from one plant can vary greatly in taste. If you have only tried it once, you might want to sample it again. Tesco Value Clear Honey could be a good one to start with.

Summary: Excellent value.
