Advantages: Tasty, cheap
Disadvantages: none
Tesco Value products have been getting a lot of reviews on here lately, largely due to people tightening their belts during the credit crunch. One of my favourite foods is cereal I could live off it! Past experience has told me that as a general rule, own brands cereals areas good as the leading brands but value ones, especially cornflakes, are truly awful.
I seem to have found an exception to the rule however and even prefer Tesco Value Coco Snaps to the brand leader, Coco Pops. I like cereals sweet and have to admit for some of the more boring ones, I add a sprinkling of sugar. Coco Pops however, I find really sweet even alone. These value ones aren't an exact replica of the leading brand but have much more of a cocoa flavour than a sweet chocolatey one. The little puffed grains of rice are the same size and are as crunchy as other brands though you will notice that they are not as dark in colour. I think the difference in taste is perhaps due to there being less coating on these. There is still enough to turn the milk chocolatey however.
This product comes in just the plastic bag, rather than a box as well, though I've always found this makes no difference to the condition of the cereal. A 375g bag costs just 66p compared to the standard own brands similar product, Tesco Choco Snaps at £1.57 and Kellogg's Coco Pops at £2.39 for the same amount.
Some cereals display their nutritional information 'per serving' and whilst some specify a serving of say 30g, some don't so I compared the nutritional values on the per 100g charts. Calories per 100g don't seem to differ much, with the value product having 387, own brand 390 and branded 390. same goes for the amount of fat, around 3g. However, the value brand had 16g less sugar than the other two at 20g per 100g rather than 36g per 100g for the own brand and Coco Pops. So, better for your wallet and your teeth.
Overall, I really liked this cereal. I know people who love Coco Pops will probably consider them bland, but as I can't really a fan in the first place, I think this cereal is delicious, not too sweet but sweet enough and a bargain too!
Summary: Another value winner!
