Advantages: Pretty decent biscuits at a very cheap price!
Disadvantages: Difficult packet to get into!
Value brands - sometimes they are great, and you can't believe that you would ever pay more for a "named" brand again, and some are as cheap in quality as they are in price, to be relegated back to the "only if I am desperate" category.
I always like to try the value version before coming to a conclusion, as I have been pleasantly surprised more often than I have been disappointed.
Today was the turn of the Tesco Value Custard Creams......and as you will have seen from the number of stars given, it comes into the category of "blimey, these aren't bad actually".
For 30p, yes, just 30p, I was able to buy a double pack of custard cream biscuits - that is a whopping 400g (almost a lb in old currency). That is more than enough to satisfy a sweet biscuit craving on a dull day in the office.....
Opening the pack was to prove a challenge - the value packs don't have any "easy tear" tab, so I had to attack the packet with the scissors, which I never manage to do too successfully! Never mind, I was soon in and able to access the goodies.
The first couple of rows were broken - but that is the case with almost every packet of biscuits, cheap, or expensive, the world over in my experience! But once I had scoffed the crumbs of the broken bits, and was able to eat whole biscuits, I could really assess them.....
They are, as you would expect from custard creams, two layers of biscuit with a vanilla cream stuck between them. The biscuits are sweet and the vanilla cream definitely tasting of vanilla. Flavourwise, they are pretty good!
Lookswise and quality wise, well, you can tell that these are not a premium brand - the biscuit is a little thinner than some custard creams, so is prone to breaking easily, and the cream is a little less plentiful. However, I have only paid 30p for a million biscuits, so I don't feel that I have been robbed of content here!
The main test, of course, is whether you can take one layer of biscuit off, and scrape away the cream layer with your front teeth.......and I am pleased to say that the Value version performed very well! Why pay more?!
Nutrition wise, there is 60 calories and 1.6 grammes of saturated fat per biscuit, which is great if you are the sort of person who can eat just one every so often......
........I'm not!!!
Suitable for vegetarians, but not absolutely guaranteed nut free. I can see no mention of hydrogenated vegetable oil in the ingredients either, so I am taking that as a positive.
All in all, for 30p, I cannot see any reason to complain - of course, they are not the same as the "premium" products, but they certainly do give me value for money and a more than acceptable compromise. I would certainly buy them again.
Summary: More than you would expect for the price!
