Advantages: Tasty biscuits, very reasonably priced for a large packet
Disadvantages: The cream filling is a little bland
Custard Cream biscuits are one of those products that hasn't really got a brand known for making them, I'm aware that Hills make a version but other than that it's simply a case of picking up whatever packet of Custard Creams I happen to see on the odd occasion that I fancy one of these biscuits.
At 30p for a 400g packet of the biscuits these Tesco Value ones are certainly the cheapest I've seen, although how will they compare taste wise to other brands?
I've now eaten a few from this packet and must say I'm rather impressed that they taste just like any other Custard Cream available. The biscuits that make up the 'cream sandwich' have a nice crunch and are not as dry in texture as I had been expecting them to be. I did notice that they are a little drier than other more pricey brands of biscuits but this is to be expected really and is true of biscuit across the Value range.
The custard cream filling inside lets the biscuit down a little if I'm honest as it's rather more bland than I'd like and also a little too sweet. The paste-like texture is good but the immediate sweetness of the filling does jolt my teeth somewhat as I bite into my biscuit.
When dunked in tea these Value Custard Creams cope admirably, the double thickness of biscuits means they are able to soak up far more of the hot tea and the flavour of it absorbed into the biscuit is absolutely delicious. I love the soft texture of the cream after it's soaked up a little tea as somehow the hot drink brings out a delicious vanilla flavour which is there more as an aftertaste than anything but becomes very moreish indeed and leads me to keep reaching for the biscuit tin whenever I have a cup of tea!
Each Tesco Value Custard Cream contains 60 calories and 2.6g of fat which are average figures for this type of biscuit. I shall buy them again as they are tasty and cheap, perfect for bulking out my biscuit tin for when my ever-hungry granddaughters visit!
Summary: Custard Creams aren't my favourite type of biscuit but these ones are very good indeed for the price

- 30/08/09 I find that the basics range are just as good as the most expensive brands. |
